My new job (3 months in) has unlimited PTO, which is wild after years of limited days. I've only taken two sick days so far. I'm trying to mind my own business, but a coworker who started after me has taken two weeks off already! What's considered reasonable when it comes to unlimited PTO? I feel I'm not taking full advantage of this benefit.

We have unlimited FTO. In reality this works out to about 6-7 weeks time off - something like a week in the spring, a week in the summer, a week for thanksgiving, 2 weeks in the winter, plus holidays outside of that and occasional extended weekends.

Also to add, that person that started after you could’ve had pre planned vacation before they accepted their offer. It’s also another reason why unlimited PTO is nice cause they didn’t have to accrue the time (or go negative) to keep their plans

My company has unlimited PTO and as long as you are meeting deliverables on time, they encourage us to take off as much as we want.

A lot of people work really hard, head down, for 2-3 weeks and just get their stuff done, then take off for a couple days to a week. That works for some. Others prefer to take single days at a time and just kind of keep a consistent flow.

Tbh, you should do what works for you and let your work speak for itself.

Instead of worrying about other people’s personal time, request time off for yourself. Seriously myob and get a life outside of work

I would say 30 days scattered around the year is quite reasonable. Longer breaks for summer vacation and Christmas, additional days around public holidays. Since most people are away during holiday periods anyway, it should be more than ok. A couple of days here and there doesn’t matter. Only summer vacation is a bit more random for everyone, but if you give notice early and have substitutes for your responsibilities, should be perfectly fine.

In the first year, I'd say 4 weeks total. You'll learn about the company culture during that time. Hopefully you find that 5-6 weeks is the norm - seems to be about what folks at my company take. We don't keep track though.

Any idea what is standard in your industry? We have unlimited at my firm, but I've been here long enough to know that new hires used to start with 20 days and then management maxed out around 30 days. So I always recommend that our newer team members put at least 4 weeks of scheduled vacation on their calendars so they're at least breaking even, and then if they need an extra day here or there, that's when the true benefit of unlimited comes in. If you're not sure, can you ask a manager or coworker or HR if they can tell you an average amount?

My husband has ‘unlimited’ PTO. I told him he owes me 20 uninterrupted-by-work vacation days a year — which are used for preplanned vacations and days the kids have off of school.
