Look at base pay, realistic tips per shift (not just “busy nights”), overtime rules, and benefits, then estimate what a typical week actually puts in your pocket. For salaried roles, divide salary plus bonus by expected hours (nights, weekends, holidays included) so you can see whether you’re trading money for stability, benefits, or schedule, instead of just chasing the highest theoretical number.
I've learned not to take jobs that rely on tips, bonuses, and other compensation structures outside of base pay in order to cover my major expenses. It causes me a lot of anxiety to feel like my entire livelihood is dependent on the kindness and generosity of other people. If I can't live off of base pay, I won't take it.
