This is a completely unethical thing to do. Taking a long paid leave and resigning just after that is really not correct. Because during this leave period organisations don't fill up that position and get the work covered up with other resources in the team. They had to work more time and harder for the same pay because you are also getting pay in maternity leave. If more people do this, then companies will start preferring male candidates only. Don't forget this is the age of Data and everything will reflect in reports and it impacts decision making of companies.
Let her complete the maternity leave, get back on the job. Irrespective of the workload there is going to be a different feel when back to work.
She'll be better off making a decision then, no need to be hasty. However, ethically, it's in the grey area.
If you think that the company is thinking about you ethically then you also can decide ethically. Nowadays people think about yourself. Will your wife get another job if she wants to work again?
There is no need to think about project budget , companies balance sheets etc. If maternity leaves cant be managed people wont hire female employees at all. Things like maternity are already considered financially atleast. If parenthood is weighing more than having job then please go ahead and resign after extension.

I got two women in my team on maternity leave. Just curious if ur wife is from my team 😛
Why the post is in corporate humour and stories?
Being a woman manager myself, it’s so frustrating to see women being so unethical when it comes to maternity leave. They are just exploiting the maternity benefits provided by company. My question is - will they be this cool if company lay them off right after the end of maternity leave/extension saying they don’t have to join back and their f&f will be processed?? Curious to know 🤔
Old post but still..it should be a decision based on how one just feels before the joining date and perspectives can change with parenthood. Ideally, would expect the manager to assure support in case the individual requires more time in getting up to speed with workload(independent assessment in the first few days without dumping work, apart from just asking if more support is required) and if there is no such clarity of support from management one should be free to do the way that suits best.
