So a few critiques on the resume. I’ll drop a second comment for career tips.
1. Gotta get your certs. Sec+ is okay to start but there are a lot of people aiming for entry level IS roles and most of them better qualified than you. How are you gonna stand out?
More advanced certs help. Think about gunning for WGU’s BS or MS Cybersecurity (you’d be able to transfer in most credits and get Sec+, Net+, CEH, CHFI, CySA+, and PenTest+ knocked out in <3mo with your background).
More than that, look at functionally (OSWP, OSCP, IAPP) or platform (CCNA, AWS, Azure, GCP) specific certs. Those will get you in the door where others are nice to have.
2. Think about better ways to (accurately) frame your experiences. Did you do any sys admin work as the support tech? Maybe call yourself that if you can back it up with know how. At a minimum consider calling your title something closer to industry standard (Helpdesk Specialist or IT Support Specialist). Not your fault your org has weird role titles but you have some agency there. One of my former titles was nine words long and didn’t mean squat to anyone outside a very specific context so I changed it to a two word alternative that still captures the same spirit.
3. You don’t really have any security background at all that I saw at a glance. Any CTF? Any security conferences? I know it’s not always easy but you can do independent security research (legally!), volunteer on OWASP projects… try to flesh out your experience in the field.
4. I need your summary to tell me in 10 words or less who you are and what you can do and then give me detail below. For you, that would be “Dynamic… Professional”
5. You’re a fresh grad. Under no circumstances should your CV be more than 1 page. I’ve got 10 years under my belt and I force mine onto one page. I only plan on a second page once I start publishing articles.
6. Your skills list is a bunch of buzzwords that gives me no detail about what unique capabilities you bring; think about specific processes (SCRUM) or bodies of knowledge (GDPR) that you may have and include those. Drop the generic buzz 🐝; it doesn’t catch any ATS filters.
7. Mistake all students make: I know you’re proud of your education but this section should be very simple and easy for hiring managers to read quickly. Degree, School, Year (Maybe GPA). Those other details belong in the skills/accomplishments section.
Send CV. You got any certs?
Here is my resume. For certification not yet but I am working on Security + now
For career: you need to look at ITS or SysAdmin or similar roles. I genuinely don’t know how successful you’ll be trying to get a SOC Analyst position with no actual security experience or certifications.
If you go after that second bachelor I suggested, that may give you an entry point… but having a background as an administrator absolutely will.
OP, this is literally good, every single thing this guy said, this is what we want of someone when we mention to give us a critique on a resume. Thank you so much SA1!
