Agreed! When you choose to leave, you need to go! Counter offers are something they should have gave you in the first place, not after you give your notice. At that point it’s too late. If they gave you what you wanted, you’d still be there!
Do you mind clarifying what you mean? I think it is almost always a good idea to negotiate your salary.
I beleive OPs made the mistake of sharing the new company and offer info and her current company offered more for her to stay, then turned around and laid her off.
I’m other words. Never take the counter offer from original employer. If they valued you, they would have given you what you want to begin with so you wouldn’t look elsewhere. If you get a better offer outside your company, take it.
Sorry to hear that! More often than not a counter is a bandaid until they figure out who to back fill you with or to keep you on for something big. They can give you a 100k increase but nothing ties them to keeping you for any number of pay periods. Sorry you had to experience the lesson!
Very true! I just experienced this too, just very recently.
A counter offer, meaning you were going to resign but they offered you a better salary? If so, then I agree completely. They already know that you are not loyal to them and at that point, all they care about is getting out of you what they can until they don't need you anymore. Sorry that happened to you and I hope you find something soon.
Agree!
