Offers to lateral from a V20 firm to Latham, Goodwin or Freshfields (all NY) as a midlevel associate. Specialist group so I’ll refrain from naming it, though I know groups can differ widely. Leaving my current firm because there isn’t enough work and I don’t want to wait to get pushed out. Any insights on any of the three? Especially interested in the lateral experience.

Avoid badlose.

Latham has a reputation for not integrating laterals. But is more prestigious than the British grocery store. Pick between them based on vibes I guess.

“British grocery store” 😂

Rule out Goodwin and it really depends on the group between Latham and Freshfields.

If you are a specialist on the transactional side, conventional wisdom would point to Latham (and is likely a safer bet career wise), but Freshfields has been growing aggressively and that might work in your favor if things go well down the road. Among the magic circles firms, I think they are really the only ones with an actual clout in the US market. But I’d hate to commute downtown tbh.

In any event, my vote goes to Latham for a safer bet and better exit opps.

Latham, and it’s not close unless something about your specialist group makes one of the other two a compelling option.

like

I've worked with many co-counsel from Latham, and they're all insufferable.

Freshfields.

like

They have to pay rainmakers a lot bc they can’t get anyone else otherwise. Sort of a rag tag group of younger partners. Take a look at their SF office. A bunch of departures. I’d stay away.

like

Latham, probably, unless FF is specifically better at whatever your niche is. Goodwin under no circumstances.

like

I’m at Goodwin. Avoid at all costs and ESPECIALLY Goodwin NY. You’ll be better off at either of the other two.

No on Goodwin.

like

100% Freshfields - great culture + they’re growing and you won’t be on the chopping block if the economy turns sour

likefunny

Meaning no layoffs?

Freshfields definitely

likesmartfunny

Recent Latham lateral, they are trying to do better about integration. Also a specialist, so the group actually makes all the difference anyway

Assuming you are lateraling from Debevoise? I’m on the recruiting committee at my firm. Receiving a ton of applications all of a sudden from Debevoise and unsure why.

funnylike

Latham. Avoid Freshfields (unless M&A but even then…)

like

Is freshfields really that bad? People i know there like it there. Of course I’m not working at freshfields so I don’t know anything for sure

funny

Goodwin if you like getting laid off

funny

Every post here is nothing more than anecdotal data. You have offers, go talk to the teams you’ll be working with and ask hard questions.

funny

Group makes all the difference so hard to say w/o that. But depends what you’re looking for. If prestige is most important then Latham undoubtedly. If you want a growth path at an already established firm then Freshfields. Goodwin I would recommend last unless the niche group is their top tier bread and butter, gives good exit opps, clear partnership, something like that etc

like

Freshfields is losing more money than its earning. Very good marketing though

I posted this somewhere else before I remembered that I am in this bowl :) so, I changed jobs 6-7 months ago and I am realizing it is not a good fit. Why do firms fire people with low but still profitable hours?
