Honestly? Have zero expectations, go with the flow and live in the moment!
Good advice, thank you

I'd say it really depends on what you're looking to do: rides, shows, other things? If you're not sure, the recos to go with the flow are good. Ideally, have some ideas, have a plan, go in the offseason, etc. Rides can take a bit to get on, particularly new rides.

We live closer to Disney World, but I'm guessing the advice will still apply. Read a touring plan or blog or watch some youtube videos to get the lay of the land. Doesn't have to be a huge time investment if you don't want it to be, but have some basic knowledge. Then decide what you/your kids want to get out of the trip. I don't know how old your kids are, but when we do Disney World, I ask my kids/husband to tell me the top 3 things (per park) that matter to them. That helps guide my day. I feel like if I can do all their top 3 things (many overlap...they all love the big rides most), it's a great success! Then, of course, we try to do much more than that, but then the rest feels like 'extra' instead of thinking you can do everything and end up feeling like you failed. It also gives me flexibility to then fill in the things I think they would enjoy or things that are important to me without them fussing, because they know I'm already prioritizing their Top 3. If you really want to get into the planning, sometimes I'll try to have a list of like Top 3 Rides, Top 3 Characters to meet (and research where/when to find them)and or Shows, and Top 3 food/snack items - that can help to have a fun mix.
How old are your kids? And what time of year are you considering?

Pre-purchase gifts and bring dresses / outfits if they want to dress like characters. Book well in advance and consider getting a travel agent to help you do it. It’s a full time job to properly plan this “vacation “ that will cost you tons of $ and make you believe that you’re supposed to be happy bc it’s “the happiest place on earth.” It’s not…. Do it…but do it like you are planning a wedding and the costs, time, hassle are sunk costs to get the memories and the pictures.
Be prepared for all the crying and screaming and yelling and meltdowns (parents and kids alike). Be prepared for the heat and the $6 water bottles. Be prepared for the kids (both yours and others) ruining the $20k of Disney magic you worked so hard to spend your money on.
But then, you’ll get those few seconds of magic from your kids’ eyeballs that make the whole horrifying experience worth it.
I was going to say something along these lines, but if you’ve got young kids there will be crying, meltdowns, and frustration. It’s inevitable. Go with the flow as much as you can and enjoy the moments.
Also plan for the recovery after a full day there. It’s intense.
