One thing I like about working in government is that there’s always something new to learn.
Every job or challenge teaches you something.
What’s one thing you’ve learned at work that really stuck with you?

Something I've learned in government work is that even the most minor details can affect how the public views a project. And it's always good to be as transparent as possible so people don't think you're hiding any details from them. That's especially important given how skeptical a lot of pubic is toward any government work.

That's very true! One minor thing can have a large positive impact or negative impact and it moves so quickly! Great to keep in mind!

I believe I've had numerous opportunities to learn how to work with a diverse range of people. I really appreciate that working in the government allows us to collaborate with so many different departments and projects. I believe it has made me a better communicator and a more empathetic person.

Love this insight 😀

Relationships move things more than titles do. Learning who to loop in, how to build trust across departments, and when to push versus pause, that’s where the real influence lives. Government work runs on people, not just policy.

I could not agree more! This is so true with work especially government work.

I learned that one of the building we had staff in does not have an active maintenance agreement. Also, that our capital asset is not covered either. Lastly, when ORF attempts to finally fix the heat, heaters will flood hallways with oil…

Never trust anyone & keep your personal info to yourself.Rumours fly like wildfire!

Very true! You never know who has or doesn't have your best interest in mind!

Additional Posts in Government

I have worked in municipal government for almost 17 years. I love what I do as an Inspector, but the environment is toxic, and administration horrible. I have an opportunity to go into the private sector side, as well a second interview for another municipality doing same job. Private sector job will pay 35,000 more but will be 3 hrs away my husband is in law enforcement and can’t leave due to his position. Concerns are: private sector and when recession hits, it’s construction, away from hubby

Is it really that difficult to get hired for a federal job? I was interviewed for a GS12 job but never heard back, they still didn’t hire anyone and I didn’t get a rejection. I applied for another GS07 job, was accepted, I took it, but I believe I can do better. I have a master’s and have extra graduate research experience. I am still applying to new jobs but I was told it is impossible to move up the grade level now. Everyone is telling me to stick with the government. What are your thoughts?

What's the salary range for a director at the Gilead Sciences foundation? There is a position perfect for me, but I don't want to throw my hat in the ring if starting salary isn't $180-190k. Also, any thoughts on the stability of their philanthropic commitment? There's talk of a recession; I don't want to go private to be cute a few months later.

This might be a long shot but I'm looking for a volunteer who is trying to break into a federal career. Maybe a transitioning veteran, recent grad, or career-changer.

I'm pursuing my master career coaching cert and need to do a recorded 45-minute session. You don't have to be identified if you don't want to.

The single session is all I'm asking but could certainly turn into a longer lasting coaching relationship (at no cost), if you like.
