Only 3 partners in my group. 2 are fantastic to work for. 1 recently promoted partner is the worst. Poor planning, not responsive, condescending, multiple calls late at night, etc. I’m happy at my group but considering leaving b/c of her. Work comes evenly between the 3 partners and I don’t have enough from the other 2 to say no to the bad one. Advice?

Tough place to be in. This is why I generally avoid really small groups, but understand that depending on your practice area/niche, may be hard to avoid.

Question is whether this is “newly promoted partner figuring things out” chaos or whether this is just who they are. Those are two very different situations (if you think it’s the latter, i’d prob consider lateraling as theyre going to make your life hell). In the meantime, I’d try to maximize staffing with the other two partners where possible, build relationships with adjacent groups if your firm allows for it, etc.

I’m a new partner and often feel like I’m still getting my legs under me with respect to organization and managing so many clients. On top of it my clients seem to have lots of fire drills so it’s been tough. What has helped is one paralegal who’s been exceptional at organizing my workload and addressing things, sometimes on the level of a third or fourth year associate.

All that to say, as the poster above said, if they have been a partner for many years and still disorganized there may not be hope, but if they’re new, maybe take some steps to see if you can help organize (I know it shouldn’t necessarily be your job to do that).

If you haven’t already, try to take initiative by asking if things need to be done ahead of time if you see something that could fall to the evening or weekend.

Being disorganized isn’t always intentional - they could be drowning and may welcome a helping hand.

We have a new partner who had to be mentored by our PGL after a few run ins with associates. If you have a good relationship with a senior partner, may be worth mentioning troubleshooting your having. Mostly the issue I see is the lack of responsiveness and then late night calls. All can be lumped under generally hard to work with because taking up all available free time because of their own mismanagement of time.

I’ve been hooking up with a guy off and on for a little over 4 years (met right after a break up) and early on set the boundary that it’s just sex. Recently told a friend abt him (we were out she wanted to know who I was texting/who was picking me up) & now she’s trying to convince me that I’m just in denial (and so is he) of having feelings for each other. He’s a good guy, has his life together, and we have fun, but I don’t get why the arrangement we have is a problem/needs to be changed??

Mid 2020, I turned down an opportunity to jump ship from my small law firm to a big law firm. At the time I had 4 years of practice under my belt with managerial experience. I thought the offer was reasonable, come in at a 2nd year level, but with the uncertainty of the times I played it safe. Now I regret it. What avenues do I have, if any, to jump into big law from a small firm?

Boomer. I am in between jobs. Laid off in 10/21 after 16+ yrs, with an ABA firm. RIF. Still on excellent terms. Took my time living off generous package and didn’t seriously start applying until 01/22. Made a rookie mistake and accepted first offer.
Turns out job wasn’t as advertised. Mutual parting of ways 3/22. Due diligence is critical.
Now interviewing a LOT. Some temp work, I still have “it”. I relate to all gens. Willing to mentor AND learn from all. Tech savvy, CTE from day one. Leads?

How many interviews is too many? I’ve done 5 one on ones with different people in the practice group. They want me to talk to a few more, but I’m frustrated. It’s so hard to find time to schedule these things and the associates don’t seem to understand I can’t just take them in the middle of the work day at work. Recruiter thinks it’s a good sign. FWIW they haven’t communicated to me position level they’d expect.

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school
