Our district is looking at the following three middle school math curriculums. Any thoughts, feedback, or experience worth sharing?

-Carnegie
-Saavas Envision (or Pearson Envision)

My school used Savaas this year. It was very rigorous. I think that it will be even more impactful with more students in person next year.

We use Savaas. I have never been a "teach from the book" teacher because I'm always disappointed in our curriculum, but this one is pretty good. I like the color-coded, step-by-step guide provided for each lesson as a reference for kiddos who need that support, and the reteaches are good for small group support. It's not perfect, but I have had to do far less supplementing with this than others I've experienced. The online content is decent, and I like that the online tests can be customized. I usually customize as needed and print off paper copies for them to take the test, then have them transfer their answers into the computer. (Helps with general grading/item analysis.) You can analyze data by standard or questions, which we usually do together as a class to identify the types of questions the group struggles with most for a whole group reteach/error analysis.

I haven't dealt with the middle school curriculum, but this is my experience with their elementary (5th grade) curriculum.

I would suggest checking out Edreports.org for thorough evaluations of the curriculum your district is considering. I am not familiar with the other two programs but Envisions is horrible (used it for 5 years) and has poor ratings on Edreports.

We use Saavas for 6th grade. I am not a huge fan. The notes are almost completely filled out for the kids so there is very little times they are doing anything, besides sitting and waiting to get to a "Try It". So, you have to get creative to keep them engaged if you are using the workbook, because as my students pointed out "Why do I need to try, they put all the answers in there for me?" I do like that you can customize tests and they have a ton of quality intervention worksheets on their website for almost any topic you can think of.
I will say my district mostly uses our own notes and then uses the online component for testing and practice.

We use Pearson at my school & it is awesome!

Seems that the vaccine that usually takes more than 10 years to develop, test for side effects and go through the regulation process is being very fast tracked to roll out - which is a super great thing to potentially eradicate the virus. on the other side of the spectrum, people with life sciences n healthcare insights, how reliable and safe would you say vaccine (being fast tracked) is...?

I'm early in my career, managed to save $30K to invest, and want to get my hands dirty with a rental property without too much risk (e.g. no HML/flipping). It sounds like that's a tall order in the NY/CT area given the prices, not to mention whether I'd be able to get a mortgage on anything below $100K, but I figure I'll give it a shot anyway. Any advice on what you might do in my position? Am I being crazy with this idea?

I’m teaching summer school at a high school, and the co-principals have asked me to focus on only 2 to 3 chapters worth (what they are calling “2-3 standards” in the eight days of summer semesters. However, they are also asking me to give kids the midterm and/or final at the end of each period, which covers 4-5 chapters each semester. My question is this: “Is it legal by California Ed code for the administration to ask me to teach less than each entire semester, yet test each whole semester?”

I finally was able to convince my principal that we need a consistent math intervention at the MS level (grades 5-8). (Right now, we are just "doing our own thing," which isn't helping students progress much.) Does anyone have any suggestions? It would be beneficial to have some sort of progress monitoring tool as part of the program, if possible. Our classes run roughly 55 minutes (which is too long for an intervention, in my humble opinion).

Thanks for any advice.

Does anyone know a great 7th grade math workbook? Our school system does not buy the students books. I’ve taught 6th grade math for 20 years and have made all my notes, worksheets and and examples, but I’ve been assigned a seventh grade math class and don’t have enough time to get all of that ready. I feel like I’ve spent so much money on Amazon and TPT but it never ends up being what I want. It’s usually too easy. I would be grateful for any ideas, suggestions or actual workbooks names. Thanks.

I found using GoFormative’s free version to be very helpful in teaching new topics to my students. I embed videos I make demonstrating how to complete a question, next I ask them to complete an example showing work, and then the next question they type their answer so it automatically alerts them to see if they answered correctly. It can be used live in a meet and on an independent virtual day. In my google meets, I’m able to give feedback on any question they have trouble with in real time.

I’m preparing to teach division with decimals. Our math program doesn’t have manipulatives for the concrete representation. Suggestions how to have students understand dividing with/without decimals?

Any good outside activities (math related) that I can do? I have Nerf guns and remote control cars I could use.

I teach a hybrid of face to face and virtual instruction and we have 1 hour and 10 minutes for whole group instruction. These are fifth graders. How would you use this time to maximize learning? What strategies/methods would you use for engagement and mastery?

I definitely feel like student engagement is low in the virtual realm. Any suggestions would be great.
