Technically it's unpaid hours, but since our salaries for 10 months of work are higher than many people earn for 12 months, I would say those hours are compensated. Athletic events, concerts, drama productions, fall festival, graduation, academic contests, etc. require people to man the ticket booths, hand out programs, or work the concessions. After all is said and done, these hours probably add up to several full days of classroom time. Then, of course, there's always grading papers and preparing lesson plans for a few hours every night. People who point out that teachers get the summer off forget that we don't get overtime and that the work day doesn't end when the last bell rings.

Exactly, there's so many extra hours and responsibilities on top of that.
None other than required PD/meetings twice a month. We get paid for anything we do outside of our contract and contract hours.
Us too. Our only required out of school hour meetings is our monthly staff meeting which takes 15 minutes at most once a month. The only other times we have to stay are back to school night and parent conferences. anything else we get paid for
Anything outside of our contracted hours are spelled out in our contract: one event per year and monthly staff and PLC meetings. We are compensated for the one event as per our collective bargaining.
According to my contract we can have 4 hours of meetings outside contract hours each month and must stay late for meet the teacher night at the beginning of the year! Other than that everything else is “optional” but in our APPR paperwork there’s a whole section about what you did for the community outside the school day (going to PTO events, staying late for concerts, etc.)
Well I’m salaried so I don’t really have hours, but the only required evening work I have is Meet the Teacher night in August.

We are not required to do extra outside of our contract hours. However, we are encouraged to participate and support students at their extracurricular activities.

We have community events like meet the teacher, curriculum night, family game nights, and spring and winter concerts, which I think is not crazy. These events usually happen on early release on Fridays, so you get a break in between.
