I'm in worker's comp defense. I review new cases and create a chronology of the claimant's history, request records via letter and subpoena, communicate with Carrier and employer for records needed for evaluation and discovery responses, prepare discovery requests and claimant releases to send to OC and respond to their discovery requests, summarize medical records, prepare discovery motions, and compile records for experts, etc.
I’m an employment law/civil rights litigation paralegal for NY/NJ/PA with federal experience.
While I don’t do intakes for our firm, I do basically everything else – we’re talking sending out retainers to drafting and editing complaints/motions/stips/letters and filing them, handling discovery (sending it out/getting it answered by Client/compiling docs for batestamping), communicating with OC/the Court, processing settlement documents, and even things for appeals.
I’m also being voluntold to do the training for the support staff for the paralegals since I’m the one with the most experience. I just finished a three-week trial which had me working on average 12-15 hour days because my attorney’s second chair was absolutely useless.
My day varies. Normally, it’d be handling outstanding things (ie filing, drafting, etc.) but with the attorney that I am assigned to leaving the firm next week – it’s making sure her files are in order and doing any last-minute things to progress the cases she’s not taking with her.
I’m in family law almost exclusively though one of my attorneys dabbles in criminal law. My day to day includes intake calls (secondary to my other job responsibilities), loads of discovery, drafting pleadings, legal research and client management. This year, I also decided it would be fun to join committees and teach CLEs in my spare time (haha - so much more work than I thought)!
My day to day duties include, but are not limited to, checking dockets, updating calendar, drafting petitions, motions, etc., drafting discovery requests/responses, case law review, drafting notices, responding to emails, and the in between. I do a lot of attorney work with supervision by attorneys, and I have about 140 open cases. I work in trust and estate litigation, but manage regular probates and conservatorships/guardianships, too.
