Partners at smaller firms (30ish attys), would you consider giving a market raise plus an annual raise and a bonus to one of your mid-level lit attorneys? Or is that a big ask from that attorney? I will say I don’t know what that market raise that I want to ask for to look like - maybe extra $20k for market, $15k for annual, and $10k for bonus. But the facts are I work more cases, handle more cases without other associates, am in the office everyday, and regularly work on business development.

I think if you have data about the market that justifies the market raise then go for it. If you don’t then I think that’s a big ask.

Ask, but be prepared to negotiate in case it is too big an ask. With smaller firms, finances can be tight behind the scenes. That said, for the right people, there’s a chance they will work with you on a solution.

Yes if needed to keep someone excellent. But the market raise mid year plus annual raise is a big ask. I’d shoot for raise to stay now but expect just a small annual raise in the next round.

40ish attorney firm and we regularly give all 3, but it’s not individualized — market raises and bonuses on a firm-wide basis, annual raise (step up on the scale) each year on anniversary of hire.

Hi Fishes,
I recently got shortlisted for a Product Manager position at Tracxn. There’s also an IPO coming up which is the reason I had applied.
But I have read some horrifying reviews about the company on Glassdoor, indeed and other forums.

I’m wondering whether it’s worth going through the interview process and I’d also like to hear opinions from anyone who has worked with the company or is aware of the company culture.

Thanks.

Any advice on how to deal with a partner/boss who is shifting all responsibility to me with zero guidance, no mentoring, and an unwillingness to discuss the issues? (Small firm, only associate under this partner and have been working at the firm for 2 years). There are an increasing number of passive aggressive comments from the partner who expects to be completely hands off once the case lands on my desk. Wants me to figure it all out despite cases being from different areas of law.

I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? For reference, the firm has a 1900 billable hour requirement and the partner said I would have “no problem” fulfilling that based on the work they have.

I recently had a specialist partner send me a fairly nasty email after I (a transactional first year) was told to ask them to review something ASAP that had clearly been on my partner’s radar for over a week. I am lead counsel on a case - we’re suing 3 businesses and my supervisor is a named incorporator of one of the businesses although he is not an officer. He is asking me to bring the file and meet with him about the progress of the case. I don’t see how that resolved the conflict…and he’s fully pressuring me to meet. How to respond?

Thoughts on sending out assignments over the weekend? I work a lot on weekends, but I don’t expect associates too.
