It all depends on the area, because the patrols must be done and sometimes the colleagues are indisposed, I work in a police department where most of my colleagues are twice my age, therefore the one who has the most overtime is me, we are talking about 40 weekly overtime.
If it is normal, as a police officer it is something that increases as responsibilities increase, the usual thing is to consume almost half of your normal hours in overtime, that is, if you work 80 hours a week, you have 40 extra hours a week.
It all depends on the department in which you work because some are much more active than others, in the police departments in the towns, despite the fact that the work is more relaxed, there is a small number of officers and that makes some work more overtime than planned. On the other hand, in big cities, it is normal that you always have excessive overtime.
When I started I had approximately 2 extra hours a day, now I'm a detective and I really don't know what my working hours are and what is overtime, the work is monstrous. So if I tell you that they will always do overtime as a policeman.
We do more like 6-7 extra shifts, mandatory OT per months. That is a good case scenario.
