Go to the hanalei pier for sure. Don’t stop there, explore the beaches further on through the woods, i forget what they’re called. My bf grew up on Kauai, his favorite place for sunset was hanalei
There’s a sidewalk on the east side that i think used to be a railroad line along the water that goes for a few miles, perfect if you like to run. No shade
The Grand Hyatt is my favorite hotel on Kauai. Older but very well maintained and the grounds are stunning.
As for food, our favorite spots for dinner have been Hukilau Lanai and Tidepools.
Also recommend doing a tour of the Nepali coast, either by boat or helicopter. Do a drive around the island and check out Princeville, but stop at Konohiki Seafoods market at the start of your day for the best poke of your life.
Rainbeau Jo's also has the best coffee on the island.
Hi! Do you mind sharing which cabana you used during your stay at the GH?
In terms of food, there some pretty amazing food trucks. Very good for a lunch/ snack on the go
Hike the hanakapiai trail to the waterfall (8 mile out and back). It’s free and amazing way to see NaPali coastline. Be sure to be on the trail by 7 am so that you’re done before sunset, it takes a while to hike because of the elevation and at times very muddy conditions. I personally liked staying in the Kapaa area instead of the resort-y areas so you get more of an authentic Kauai vibe
Do you like camping and hiking?
Hiking yes. Camping no lol
We stayed at Hilton Garden Inn Kauai Wailua Bay and it’s run down. Needs a major renovation but the workers were amazing.
How long are you going for and what hotels do you typically stay in? First time?
I’d say split your time between south side and north side.
Hotels:
Your nicest hotels on the island are the grand Hyatt (south side) and the one hotel (north side).
Excursions:
- Must do excursion is see the Nepali coast.
- My favorite cheaper thing to do is kayaking down the river to hanalei bay (you can start at kayak Hanalei), they have dry bags you can keep lunch in.
- go see some waterfalls
Food:
- Konohiki seafoods is right by airport and has good poke and chicken
- Kilauea fish market is probably my favorite food spot on the island
- The dolphin in Hanalei is a great nice dinner place (others on south side at tide pools or hukilau lanai)

Snorkel Poipu beach. Get there early morning to maximize turtle sightings. You’ll find many just off the beach
Rent a bike and bike the bike path that circles most of the island. Pack a towel and some snorkel gear, you can stop at random beaches along the path to swim and snorkel. And there are places to eat along the way too.
