I would use a COL calculator to see how much your large market salary is in this new location. That may help put things in perspective.

Don't fall for the COL thing. If you're moving out of NYC, you end up with lots of monthly expenses you likely never had. The big ones being car payment, car insurance, and gas. Rent might be cheaper, but those other things offset the difference of what you're paying for rent/metro in the city. If they don't want to pay you, don't go. It will be an overall step backwards in quality of life.
Well, I have two single people on my Kansas City team, each making less than $70k, and each bought a nice 3br/2ba home in great neighborhoods with great schools, about 15-20 minutes from downtown. So...
If our downtown housing is pricey, it’s because there just isn’t much available. And if we can buy a house instead of having to deal with apartment living and roommates, we’re gonna do that.
Every calculator shows the COL difference can be huge. But it doesn’t matter. What matters is what life you want to live.
No one in a small or mid-market is going to pay you NYC money. We can’t afford it. NerdWallet has a cost of living calculator - I’d check it out. As much as some folks hate to admit it, the COL difference can be significant. But that doesn’t mean you’ll like living in a smaller city.
