Question for heads of Legal w/small teams: how do you manage promotions/retention when your dept isn’t expected to really grow? We’ve got a small (~3 attorney) team at a late-stage startup. Lots of awesome career experiences in the future (possible fundings, IPO, biz strategy, etc), but very unlikely we add much to headcount. What can the team expect? Will companies promote to Director/AGC/etc based on experience? Or are we frozen at Senior Counsel (and comp) without new hires to go under us?

They don’t care about adding more people to the team if they can handle the workload. Just give them more money. Changing the titles is a nice plus but really just give them more money and they’ll be happy. That’s what people really talk about when they say they want to grow.

If there is really no more room for comp, you’re gonna have to accept the risk of higher turnover and having an unmotivated team. No amount of free pizza or casual Fridays can change that.

Yes! That’s right! I think you can and also make the change to AGC or something. If you deserve it, I don’t see why not.

Asking for a friend:
My friend received two job offers for Account Executive roles: a Mid-Market role with Confluent and an Enterprise role with ThoughtSpot. He’s conflicted because Confluent is a more established company, ThoughtSpot is Pre-IPO. Confluent is a lucrative product to sell and has established SDR reps so there’s a good blend of inbound and outbound sales. Thoughtspot is more of a startup culture where most of the sales comes from outbound and it’s a tougher sell.

Working Moms/Dads: Do in-house positions exist with flex time hours? I need to be able to leave work at 4pm to pick up my son from daycare, but i can get back online at home to resume any unfinished work at 8pm. Is this realistic to convey to any companies in an interview? Pandemic aside, is face time 9-7pm really important? Or should i just try to find a job with a salary that covers a nanny salary and accept that i will never see my son on weekdays (which would be sad for both of us)? TIA!

Very specific to retail and/or hospitality in-house roles: has anyone found a good solution for predictive scheduling?
