Query whether if you like this firm if you’d want to negotiate yourself out of their good graces by being greedy. If the offer is fair and you love the firm, don’t push your luck unless you’re fully ok with an offer being rescinded because you rubbed someone the wrong way.
I mention this because you’re thinking of pre-negotiating a severance package as a new lateral associate at a biglaw firm. In all honesty, probably one of the dumbest things I’ve seen on the topic. You aren’t a C suite executive.
Ask if there’s flexibility for a reasonable signing bonus and go from there. Then be content with enough.
Thanks! Again, really appreciate this perspective!

Not a severance package, but I have a friend who got a sizable signing bonus and with that, a retention agreement.
Thanks! Can you expound on what the retention agreement said conceptually?
I would avoid suggesting you are someone they might want to fire later, and biglaw generally has better severance for associates that other industries so you will likely be okay without specifics.
Re severance, you could ask whether there’s an ERISA severance plan and ask for a copy of it or a summary.
