It depends, some companies set up the hiring ads and forget about them so they sit there awhile. But other companies have the always hiring the right people thought process. So they think quality candidates will keep apply so the company will have a pile of resumes to choose from when they are actually looking to hire someone. I never apply for any position that hasn’t been updated in 3-4 weeks
They have major problems revolving around the position. A poor decision was made at some point along the way, or a great decision wasn’t made. Unless it’s a role that makes up 50% of the company, ie a recruiter at a recruiting firm, stay away!
1. Check their career site. LinkedIn isn’t perfect. They could have posted the ad and forgotten about it. It happens sometimes. Especially for positions that are auto-posted from a career site. I recently found out that an old colleague’s posting was up for over a year because of an error in transferring their positions when they quit. The role had been filled already.
2. They had a qualified candidate(s) but they withdrew/didn’t accept the opportunity.
3. They haven’t properly defined what they want, or don’t have the right interview panel/decision maker(s) in place.
4. It’s an evergreen req, meaning, they’re constantly hiring for that title, trying to create a pipeline, and keep it posted at all times.
It doesn’t hurt to apply but definitely ask why the role is open, if you get to speak with a recruiter. They should be updating their postings regularly if they actually care about filling it.
