There seems to be quite a few people in here looking to join a startup.
We're a mature aerospace impact startup (in Switzerland) pre launch for a new platform to engage and empower passangers in order to accelerate sustainability in aviation. Our product website is www.adaption.me and company website is www.optimaero .ai.
If you're interested in joining us, and you think you have skills that suit our business, you could drop me a speculative application by email at hello@OptimAero.ai.

I prefer it. I’ve got a better monitor, keyboard and mouse than has ever been sent to me. Same with cam and earphones. And if their software is SaaS, I’m going to use my own laptop anyways
I’d rather have nice, name brand new hire schwag than home office stuff.
It really depends on the company. My company will provide monitors and other accessories like keyboard, mouse, dock, as well as $500 stipend for new employees to buy a deck and/or chair.
My company wanted me to come in to office, so they bought me a condo near them.
Somehow you’ve had three companies that provide everything but this can vary quite a bit. You should consider investing in your own setup. If not ask your employer what you can expense or order through their systems.
You work from home, you save enough in commute. Fix yourself some equipment
Current fully remote company provided 3 Apple MacBook Pro’s to choose from, all the peripherals (including either AirPods or gaming headset), standing desk and chair. They did not skimp on the equipment and I truly appreciated being given several options for each peripheral so I could really customize my setup - I’ve never held a single piece of equipment as expensive as my MBP, I’m always scared to touch it 😂
I prefer a stipend honestly and I think it is strange they didn’t provide anything at all
I’m at an early stage startup and they don’t provide anything. None of the other sister startups in the portfolio do, either.
So what did you do?
1st fully remote job: they provided with a laptop and about USD$1000 to buy whatever i wanted or needed.
2nd remote job: USD$2500 for a laptop and about USD$1500 for other things (monitor, chair, apple care, etc).
I think the laptop is the bare minimum. Maybe it’s because is a small company, a new startup?
Thank you, this was helpful! I got a small (taxable!) stipend that’ll work out to be about $200 post tax. I’m at $400 from getting a chair and adapters for a macbook. It seems a little skimpy to me so your post is definitely validating!
I’ve been remote for almost 9 years. Only one firm has provided a “full setup”, and 90% of that sat in the boxes in a closet taking up space.
I’d prefer a stipend to pick up a new chair or something. If they provide a stipend, most often it’ll be taxed. (Which is unfortunate.). Some smaller companies will allow you to forego that stipend in favor of a reimbursement up to $X to get around the tax implication.
Given I work with SaaS products; I loathe having to use a provided laptop - never mind all the other accessories.
YMMV. Best of luck.
Buy it yourself and use it as a tax write off
You can’t deduct equipment unless it’s for a business you own. Don’t believe the hype.
My industry firm org went full remote in 2018. At the time we had the option to request a dock, but everything else was up to us. Given how outdated the peripherals were at the office (a single 19" monitor was standard, you had to get several approvals to get a larger and/or multiple monitors), I happily chose to furnish my own remote setup.
They gave me an extra monitor + $500 budget that I get to keep.
32" 4k monitor. Used.
Nice keyboard and mouse set with some fancy features. Looked new.
Nice-ish and small touchscreen laptop, but not a workhorse. Used.
Ok headset. Nothing special but not barebones cheap either.
No allowance to make own setup.
I was given a single laptop and a bulky pair of head phones. I bought a docking station, dual monitors, wireless earbuds, mouse, keyboard, and a USB station so I had all sorts of USB ports to plug my devices into.
I’ve had three jobs since the pandemic started and each provided between 1-2000 for each employee to buy whatever they wanted/needed
I think a decent company would provide hardware or a stipend. Did they at least provide you with a phone? It may, or may not, be a sign of how well they treat their employees. Pay attention to your gut.
I got a double wide monitor, laptop, keyboard, mouse, dongle, and headset. I wanted a better webcam, so I purchased that myself.
They did offer us a desk, chair, etc. I took my desk setup budget and got a Herman Miller chair.
As a contractor for Cisco I got a single laptop and nothing else. I had to request a working setup (single 13" laptop screen was not going to work for my role). After my requests were approved I was told I could get up to approx $500 worth of equipment, but fulltime employees got $750-1000 if I remember correctly. Either way, I think it varies from company to company and it still shocks me when any company using remote employees assumes a single laptop will work. Doing anything beyond a single spreadsheet needs multiple monitors, a full size keyboard, etc.
I’m fully remote and was given the same BUT I can get reimbursed for up to $150 in supplies. I don’t think it’s uncommon. Interesting to see what others have gotten in comments above as stipends to buy supplies.
I think mine is lower than others because I technically have office space I can use if I choose.
