Third year consulting manager here. It depends on your LOB and team, and what you classify as “business development.” I’ve been expected to participate in proposals and oral presentations for many years. And now, more than ever, I’m also expected to attend external events to network. Your “book” definitely matters as a 3rd or 4th year manager; however, you’re not necessarily expected to bring in business until Director. For managers, you’re evaluated more on managed revenue and “growth,” which often just boils down to who gets credit within the system when new clients/projects are set up. Hope this helps.

Question for my friend at KPMG. Her MDs and Partners have been directing her to eat her hours. If she charges over 45 hours she will get emails from management and when she charges over 65 she got a call from a PPMD. I work at deloitte and have never been told to do this and thought it honestly was illegal. Thoughts? It doesn’t seem right that she’s having to eat those hours and feel scared when she’s working til 10/12 every night.
