Also, I am wanting to try and break into a true research role. I feel like I am getting paid well for what I am doing but at the same time don't have quite the experience that many investment analyst jobs are wanting - so I'm not sure if I'd get a great raise by switching jobs.
Consider looking at the credit rating agencies. As a primary analyst your research is public facing and it’s very rewarding. A lot of face time with management teams and debt investors. The pay is below market compared to buy or sell side research / due diligence. However, I guarantee you would make more than $82K. Think more in the $100-$135K range (+ bonus) depending on how good you are.
Edit: it’s also really good work life balance compared to other financial services roles. 40-50 hr weeks
I am in the same boat but in a MCOL city and my department functions as an OCIO to other advisors.
Have literally the same two roles of client onboarding / trading and documentation as a bolt on to my main role of investment due diligence and asset allocation strategy. I am also responsible for internal client reporting. I make just under $80k with a bonus capped at 10%. So COL adjusted we are probably at a similar spot.
Been casually starting to look around and finding quite a wide range of outcomes for new roles but most fall between $85k base for pure analyst and $110k base for a role more like ours sounds, with a few that push $125 for senior level and expanded responsibility on the PM side, but I’d be curious to see what others say to this post.
Happy to chat over PM if you’d like more detail or to compare notes.
Thanks for the input. According to PayScale (at least for DFW), here’s what I’m getting for total pay (base plus bonus). Format is median/90th percentile:
-4yrs experience, 84k/112k
-4yrs with CFA, 90k/119k
-6yrs experience, 91k/123k
-6yrs with CFA, 97k/130k
