There’s two sides to it:
1. You don’t see people on wave runners who are sad.
2. More money can genuinely translate to more problems.
You can absolutely manage your own happiness - we have an HHI of >$500k in a mid COL city, but live in the same house we need when we moved here 8 years ago with an HHI of ~$180k. We can afford a lot more, but choose not to because we find we’re a lot happier with lower fixed costs. If we earned less, we’d live somewhere that cost less.

Salary or total? Total probably 500k+ for single person
Yeah that's bull. Nice sentiment and all, but c'mon. It's a lot easier to be happy when you can afford to do things than it is to be happy when you're flat broke. I'd be happy at $300k.
$250k is solid assuming no debt
Money buyers opportunity, resources, safety, options. I may not buy happiness, but it buys things that make you happy. I would honestly be thrilled with $150k in my low COL city.
Lower stress makes it easier to be happy more often. Our HHI cleared just shy of $700k last year thanks in part to an RSU vesting cliff. There’s a calm that comes with that. We’re in the same house we bought 15 years ago for $200k and drive paid off, 2020 vehicles. Beats the hell out of ducking creditors like I was 35 years ago.
500k sounds like a good number for me.
