Senior associate in private funds. I spent my first ~4 years representing both GPs and LPs, but have focused on LP-side work since. I’m considering a pivot back to the GP side, driven largely by intellectual curiosity. I want a fuller, deeper understanding of fund formation and operation — why terms are drafted the way they are, how they function in practice, and what’s happening inside a fund house. Is that expectation too idealistic? Open to class year/ pay cut.

Nothing is unrealistic if you’re open to whatever class year/pay cut is necessary to get you where you want to go. And you’re already in funds, so it’s not like you’re retooling from a whole separate practice area.

In funds, but what’s driving the intellectual curiosity in fund formation?

lol, are you at Deb? I had a similar set-up there & made the same jump you did. HVP + our big SWF client, I’m guessing?

like

you can do this, but it is an adjustment, even if you are coming from like Debevoise's LP practice. But you are right to pivot as the LP side does not have a sustainable economic model and associates are often pushed out or put on career associate tracks

Based on my experience on the gp side, prob deb or ropes

I’ve been approached my by company that one of our large clients (who im currently project managing for) is looking for a consultant of sorts, and if they hire us, I’d be the first person asked to take on this consultant role. This isn’t something my company typically offers and would greatly change the scope of my role. Has anyone ever taken on a role like this? If so, were you able to negotiate a percentage of the consulting fee? Or was it a bump in salary during the project?

Let’s talk speed reading. I’m a slow reader and listened to a podcast recently on speed reading. I’m intrigued. Who here speed reads? How did you learn those skills, and what types of documents do you speed read in practice? I do mostly litigation and am thinking that speed reading would help with research but maybe not things like doc review where you need to review for both responsiveness and privilege.

Any Atomic Habit readers here? I’m brainstorming identity-based habits for two things I want to change:

-I want to bill more hours, so my goal is to become the type of person who bills at least 8 a day
-I want to drink less alcohol, so my goal is to become the type of person who drinks occasionally

Neither of these feel that helpful. Any one have suggestions for other identity-based goals that get at these changes I want to make?

I have ADD and occasionally make small mistakes in my work, like leaving a word missing when editing sentences, small formatting errors or leaving an internal comment in drafts sent to clients. All partners have been very understanding and care about the quality of my work, and no client has ever complained. Partners and clients praise my work.

But now, one partner has become super mad and when I explained ADD, he said:
