Renting a car should not even be considered as an option tbh
Uber or subway, yes there’s issues but there are tons of kids who are on the subway every day. Uber is the next option if you truly refuse the subway. Would never rent a car in NYC.
Renting a car in NYC would never cross my mind unless I’m leaving the city.
There’s always been homeless living on the subways, they’re just more prevalent now that ridership is lower. Just stay aware and keep your distance.
You hear horror stories because that’s more newsworthy than “3 million people safely rode the trains today with no incidents”
It’s true that the NYC subway is a poorly maintained dump and worse than any other subway I’ve ever ridden including in developing countries, but it works at least.
Why would you go to the Bronx if you’re a tourist?
You know there’s a baseball team there with a rather famous stadium too, right?
I would recommend Uber/Lyft/cab - I would personally not be taking my kids into the city any time soon, and for sure no where near the subway! Highly recommend the Bronx Zoo, the Intrepid, the Spy Museum, the Museum of Natural History, the Botanical Gardens (Bronx), the Central Park Zoo.... so many great things to do with a child at that age! I hope you guys have a great time!
I take the subway daily and the usual pre-pandemic rules still apply. That means to be wary of a completely open car (there is a reason for it, generally), not to make eye contact and to try to stick in somewhat busier environments (if you feel unsafe).
I’d argue you will be very fine unless you travel in the dead of night or far out. But travel to the Zoo on weekends should still be quite busy.
Obviously use the trifecta of apps (Lyft, Uber and curb) if you don’t want to use the subway. Prices might wary a lot and you can get some good deals that way
Fair questions. My husband is here in the Bronx on a work trip and I brought my 12 y o but we are mainly here to get a change of scenery and do remote work /school from the hotel. We just have this weekend and next weekend to tour.
Uber in/out of the Bronx and take subways while in Manhattan or between short stops in well known areas.
If you’re really concerned, take the subway during rush hours. A ton of people commute from the outer boroughs into Manhattan to work and the trains will be full of people. don’t be afraid to just pop out and either move to another car or wait at a station for another train if you feel really sketched out by someone. You can sit in a middle car as it’s by the conductor and usually those have the most people in them. Also don’t take a suspiciously empty car because there’s usually a reason for that (smelly and/or crazy person).
Agree with most here. Don’t skip out of “Curb”. It’s the taxi app that’s currently competing with Uber and Lyft. Sometimes it has lower pricing.
DO NOT RENT A CAR! The price! The taxes! The parking! Just NO
You won’t be riding the subway for more than 15 minutes at a time if you’re in Manhattan. Uber is OK, Lyft is better. I’d splurge on a hotel midtown/near Central Park for the full NYC tourist experience. Why would you go to the Bronx?
Rising Star
You should walk and take subway…but what are you doing in the Bronx? Nothing to see except for zoo (kids get bored at Botanical garden)
Do NOT rent a car in NYC.
