So...I want to ask to go to ChatGPT. Ask it to prepare you a lesson plan for something in your content area, be specific, and ask to it meet your state standard for a grade that you teach. Tell me what your feelings are about the results.

It will be basic and lacking in creativity.

My bigger concern is what we’ve seen at our school. We have someone who uses AI to make lesson plans and then doesn’t read through the plan. When this person goes to teach it to the class, it’s clear that they don’t really even know what they’re asking the kids to do.

This is exactly what the kids do when they use it. They don’t even read what AI spits out and then wonder how I know they used it.

MSBT, I completely agree.

I'd be extremely wary of using any AI tool to craft a lesson plan, or anything else for that matter. If you use something like that for some brainstorming, and it's a limited use and you're certainly not going to pass it off as work, the tools may be useful. But relying on them, besides being unethical, is just very risky.

I know teachers who use AI as starting points for their lesson plans. I wouldn't recommend using them all the time, but the one I did was very well done and had some interactive, fun activities. The extension activities were super engaging.

If you are being evaluated and you have to write a bunch of goals you could get a good start using AI.

So true. As long as one is careful and specific, AI can supply done interesting material. As with anything I create, I still cite sir my sources, whether it is AI or TPT

I tried this last school year by asking to create a lesson for a book I have taught many times and know well. I wasn't planning to use it, but I wanted to see what it could do.

I tried Beloved by Toni Morrison. The lesson was VERY generic. You could change the title and author to ANY title and author without changing the questions, and it would still work.

Then I tried Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. This was not on Chat GPT but on another AI site that is marketed to teachers. Again, generic, but in the middle of the lesson plan, Steinbeck was referred to as William Faulkner! I can imagine a teacher just copying it and handing it out to students, and looking like a fool.

This summer, I did another experiment with ChatGPT. I asked it to grade papers. These were papers from last year that had long since been graded. I chose 3 papers - one exemplary, one typical, and one dreadful. ChatGPT gave very detailed feedback. Still a bit generic, but you could tell it tried to be encouraging and upbeat lol.

Still - I wouldn't use it to grade papers. That's kind of my job? And I imagine that a student turning in an AI paper that's graded by an AI grader would just be a prime example of everything that's wrong in the world. (Slight exaggeration, don't come at me.)

One thing I do, when I suspect a student of using AI for a paper, is run it through the AI detectors. There are several of them, and I run it through more than one. I'm teaching summer school right now and someone wrote a "personal reflection" for creative writing using ChatGPT. Yikes.

The best AI detector was only 80% accurate—and that study was a super recent one. In fact, some AI detectors are stopping services because people have falsely lost their jobs.
ps: there is an AI in Education bowl!

I asked it to write a lesson plan for an Algebra 2 assignment. It gave me a breakdown very similar to what someone might find as a recommendation in a teacher text book. So if you’re without a textbook, it’s a really good starting point. I also give it bonus points for formatting some tricky equations correctly. It’s actually getting really good at equation creation.

Most veteran math teachers I know don’t really follow what the book says to do for lesson plans, and I would treat this the same way. It’s a skeletal outline and would be helpful for new teachers, but it lacks substance and creativity.

It would, though, be extremely useful for the formulaic lesson plans I have to submit for observations. And if your district requires detailed lesson plans weekly or daily, I would absolutely use it for that.

Our district had a class for all secondary ELA teachers to explore AI tools. We had the opportunity to use ChatGPT to discover when and how it can be used effectively. Districts should be addressing this topic to include information to help teachers become well-informed about AI; in turn, teachers will be better equipped to share information with our students, as well.

Whether teachers are ready to accept AI or not, it is forever in our presence. Think about it-how often di you use AI (Alexa, Bixby, Smart appliances, etc).

Did anyone else adopt the new Florida Wonders curriculum? We just adopted it this school year, and I teach 4th grade. My team and I have not found a good flow, schedule, or whatever you want to call it. We feel like it teaches too many skills in one lesson, and we are not able to truly teach anything “deep” enough for students to master. Does anyone have any insight? What do you do? Do you like the curriculum? Why or why not? Would you be willing to share what you do weekly/daily? Thanks!
