I started in the same type of school and the best advice I got was to take time and build a classroom culture while setting class rules and boundaries. This helped the students get to know me and helped me get to know them. It is not an over night change but something you need to do for a couple of weeks and then revisit it once or twice every couple of week. Dont let the scholars think it was just a start of the year thing.
Thank you for your advice and SUPPORT!!! I’m not only a first year teacher and in a culture that I’ve worked in before but I’m also teaching a content that these students have never ever had to take before..............Health!!! To me it’s my passion! To them “why do we need to know this I’m not going to be a doctor or anything”. But I switched things up and took an ‘interest inventory’ with many different health topics to see what THEY wanted to learn and talk about. We are currently finishing up Substance Abuse, which a personal content to many of my students.
I have made more relationships during this content lessons than I did the first few months of school.
I realized I needed to teach what they wanted and needed❤️
I guess being a Health teacher from Ohio (Ohio is the ONLY state that doesn’t have Health standards) and the ONLY Middle School Health Teacher in the district, I kinda have the freedom to do that.
But again thank you for your support!!! I can’t tell you how much I appreciated reading your comment. Teacher’s are absolutely the amazing!! They have the biggest most caring hearts!! This is why we are the best in the world 😉
Wow!!! YOU GO!
Agree with the first comment and kudos to you for having them involved in their learning process! I teach in a subject that allows for a lot of personal choice and I find it makes such a difference in their engagement!
