That feeling as a police officer will always be there. Stay on the force "Part Time" as a "Reserve Officer" go in once a month on one shift get your taste of it and go home. You made it this far, congratulations on your retirement. Stay Safe!!!!!!
Congrats on your retirement, OP! Thank you for your service! Well, my pops never felt that way. He embraced the feeling as a police officer even after his retirement.
I went through it as well. It’s your identity to a certain extent and it’s a bit surreal at first. You do get past it and recognize the next stage of your life. You do still get plenty of respect with the retired shield.
thats a normal feeling and it will pass. find something to keep you busy. congrats.
It can get bad- depending on who you are, from sleep disorders to feeling alienated as a civilian again- while you are different and generally not accepted back into civilian life (nor do you accept other civilians), to missing that camaraderie because you’re not part of the close knit cop culture anymore. Best thing is to team up with other retired service minded ex- LE, mil, Fire, etc.. or find a replacement like martial arts, boxing, wrestling club, to keep you fit, and cliqued up.
