Hey, totally get where you’re coming from, it’s a tricky spot, especially when your actual day-to-day work doesn’t match the official title.
Here’s the thing: titles do matter on paper, especially during reference checks and background verification. Meta (and most big tech companies) will check your employment details through a third-party service like HireRight or similar, and that info usually comes straight from HR—so it’ll show “Senior Program Manager” as your official title, not “Product Manager.”
That said, it's very common to highlight your actual responsibilities more than the literal title. One safe approach is to use your official title, but clarify your scope in your resume or LinkedIn—for example:
Amazon — Sr. Program Manager (Product-focused role)
Embedded within product team; led roadmap, feature definition, and customer research for ABC...
This keeps you honest while still telling the story of your actual experience.
If you fully change the title to “Product Manager,” you might raise red flags during verification, especially if your references are just confirming HR data. Worst-case scenario: it could look like you’re misrepresenting yourself. Recruiters are usually okay with some gray area as long as it’s transparent and backed by your responsibilities.
So my advice: focus more on crafting a strong narrative in your resume, portfolio, and interviews that shows you’ve been doing the work of a product manager. Let that speak louder than the title alone.
Hope that helps!
