I would call in a manager. Usually when there's a sale like that there's some kind of language explaining there are no refunds on sale items, or something along those lines. I'm just always amazed at how people will degrade themselves to try something like that. People who do that must bring a lot of bad luck down on themselves, it just seems like an awful way to live.
I’d return both and on the same receipt charge out the single item. Then it’s on the same transaction and you can show how if one is retuned they both are and the other is charged at the regular price.
This is a very knowledgeable resolution.. we need more people who can be fair and satisfying for both perspectives and not just dismiss a genuine customer issue due to not knowing how to properly accommodate or fear of the company backlash
I'd say something like Ma'am, I've explained how the sale worked and our return policy. If you'd like to discuss this further, I can call my manager over to assist you. People try to get away with everything.
While I’m not in our marketing department, I know we’d never knowingly confuse or fool our customers by tricking them & hands down, not for profit. There’s so many corporate and personal integrity & character wrongs w/ that I can’t even hypothetically count! That said……
This sale saved people 19 bucks. $21 for (2) shirts that typically run $40 & it read:
“Buy 1 for 20 bucks get a 2nd for a buck.” It COULD have read
“Buy 1 for a buck get a 2nd for 20 bucks *w/ a 2 shirt minimum.”
Both are the same & thus why, whether you’re returning “shirt # 1, shirt# 2 (or shirt 22) it doesn’t matter.
“Unfortunately $1 is $19 short on this sales minimum threshold
“Let’s step aside and get one your husband will like to get you that $19 savings or process your return.”
Since it’s not stated, I assumed system didn’t prorate a max return value per item & left that option out)
Man, my first response in my head while I was reading the post was SO SHORT & definitely NOT TOO SWEET. WHAT IS THERE NOT TO UNDERSTAND. Sheesh. No, personally, I WOULD NOT INVOLVE MANAGEMENT UNLESS IT GOT TO A POINT THAT YOU WERE UNCOMFORTABLE.
But what did you do? What will you do differently next time could be this scenario or next off the wall customer?!
When companies run those types of sales, it could be to increase foot traffic (ie customer count) or to deplete out dated inventory for new inventory. Either way it's to make money and move product. Keeping in mind that product itself is costing the company while it remains in inventory. If the company's goal is to increase customer count for future sales growth then the goal is to make the customer happy without sacrificing profits. First you want to ensure the customer that you are there to make them happy and then offer a resolution that will force them to come back to the store without losing the sale. (Ie. Store gift card worth 20 dollars) without the exchange of money from register. If the original plan was to deplete inventory then offer the customer an exchange for the shirt that she believes her husband will like. Either way keep the customer coming back.
Inform her it’s a total purchase deal. In order to get the $20 she must return both shirts. Or at best return 50% of the $21. Mark her receipt appropriately so if she returns the other shirt she gets the other 50% total.
Nope. You are getting $1 back.
Not sure about your business, but all retail stores i have worked in on bogo deals, if one item is returned, there is an adjusted balance between the two in case 2 for 21 so the returned one would have a return value of 10.50.
That is hilarious. An infinite money and shirt hack. What did you say?
I assumed that was common sense. Like if you buy one get one half price it's always the cheaper of the 2 that you get for half price. So it would be the same if you buy one get one you can't just return one and expect full refund or in this case get $20 instead of the $1. Places would lose so much money people buying & returning all day long. When at the register explain if returning one they only get the $1 or no returns on sale items. Back when Old Navy did their $1 T-shirt sale people tried doing this.
