Some firms did away with offices for associates and now I’ve heard some are toying with the idea of adopting HOT DESKING. If this happens I’ll leave the law

I don’t blame you. I didn’t sign up to play musical chairs every morning.

Being a lawyer isn’t the easiest job. But it has some nice perks, and one of them has been always having a private office, even when I was a brand-new associate awaiting bar exam results.

like

Ok, I hate hot desking, but let’s get real: if your firm does this, it means they’re offering at least 3 days a week from home, permanently. That is a huge lifestyle win. It is also unreasonable to expect firms that do this to maintain empty private offices with empty bookshelves and empty desk drawers. You can’t really have it both ways.

This.

Oh man, I think I’d get a kick out of hot desking. So many lawyers are passive-aggressive. In law school, too many people could have their day ruined if someone sat in “their” seat

A18 is wise very wise

My firm now only has cubicles. I intend to leave once we’re told to return to the office.

like

Guys it's honestly embarrassing you don't understand how firms work. If they gave associates offices instead of cubicle their per partner profit might drop from 4 million to 3.9 and that's UNACCEPTABLE. Please be more considerate in your discussions moving forward.

I am for it if it means WFH 3-4 days a week. Also, I suspect it will be more like Big 4 where you sign up in advance than free-for-all library carrels.

like

Tell your partners not do do it

Don’t roast me but can I ask what hot desking is?

like

One guy sits at a desk and another one squats over the desk and....wait no that's something else

From what I have heard, the firms using this mode are also doing at least a partial wfh so if that is the trade off doesn’t sound to bad.

like

Lol I am at a respectable firm that has a permanent flex option and I still have an assigned office that I have not been to an single time in 1.5 yrs.

but if the option was all in office or part wfh and share a workspace I am taking the later.

Was seconded once to a major commodity company who has had this hotdesking system for years.

They have a rule where anything personal must fit in a certain dimension box at the end of the day. If it's not in the box at 1900HRS, the cleaning lady sweeps everything on the table into the bin.

Absolutely bonkers. Anxiety at the end of each day.

like

I hate the concept of hoteling/hot desking. Partly because I’m fastidiously clean about my office work spaces… the idea of constantly sharing desks, keyboards, monitors, etc kind of grosses me out. Kind of the same vibes as an elementary school computer lab.

But I do recognize that we might need to make some changes if a lot of us are going to WFH regularly. I wouldn’t mind reducing the size of our offices or potentially sharing an office with another associate who is also WFH part time.

like

Ok. Then leave. Plenty of others willing to take a high-paying firm job with a hot-desking arrangement in exchange for new (and very likely much more liberal) WFH flexibility. Don’t let the entitlement hit you on the way out.

likefunny

I am not so sure. You been trying to recruit?

like

I would be open to sharing an office with another person on the days I wasn’t in. Like if I was in M/W/F and they were in T/Th. I did that with a classroom when I was a teacher and it isn’t terrible if you aren’t a mess of a human and you each respect each other’s cabinets.

I would quit before I was expected to sit in a new spot each time I came in though. Either don’t make me come in at all or give me an assigned spot.

like

This makes sense to me. Individual offices seem wasteful if the majority of attorneys are doing a hybrid schedule, but the privacy and comfort of a consistent office is incredibly valuable. This seems like a better approach.

I cannot imagine trying to take conference calls. Also this should only be for ppl who truly work on one laptop—not us who work with landlines and monitors

like

What the heck. The whole point of having a work space is being able to blast conference calls on speaker. Hard no. How dare they??!!

like

My firm is doing this. Already had to bring all my stuff home and no one has assigned desks anymore. However, we are mostly WFH (i haven't been to the office in months)

like

Worst firm ever!!!

funny

So if I understand correctly, the difference between hot desking and hostelling is that with hotelling your default is wfh so when you decide to come in they assign you a random office. But with hotdesking they are making you come in AND make you basically hunger games it out for a desk? Hotelling seems fair if they don't require folks to come into the office, but if they make people come in they can at least coordinate office sharing so you have a go to space with someone on a different schedule

My firm proposed having everyone in on Thursdays when they rolled out flex schedules (for in office meetings etc), so they would still need the same number of offices as pre covid

like

I would also leave. There’s something to be said for the cut to morale that being a homeless associate would cause. My firm just put all associates in interior offices and I hate it.

A8, great term: “homeless associate” and I’m serious.Pretty accurate

like

I’d rather die

Hotelling is OK if full wfh available

Then the firm should distribute cost savings to associates!

Received an offer to lateral to a Big Law firm in my current state. Kind of my dream job. Recently decided with my spouse that we’ve had more than enough of our current state and we want to move out of state next year. There’s no local office for this firm where we’re going, and no idea if remote would be an option. Conflicted on whether it’s fair to take the position, although I really want it. Thoughts?

Young lawyer here. I fell for an impersonation scam. Scammer pretended to be a very senior partner at my firm. I am mortified and embarrassed, as it’s not something I would normally fall for. I was in a rush and when I saw the partners name on the email my knee-jerk reaction was “if he says jump you ask how high”.
