Someone at a team dinner asked if H1B visa worker is working remotely then is he/she needed in US? Can’t it be done from India? Bring them onsite once a quarter or even 2 months for critical in person meetings. Then that led to other discussion on should that logic be applied to every remote job. Interesting topic to piss people off on dinner table :)

Not a fun conversation, but it’s true. If a role requires no in-person time, it’s also generally easier to offshore. Some exceptions if a certain skill set really can’t be found in other markets, or if there are legal/regulatory/contractual barriers on where it’s allowed to be done.

It doesn’t mean remote work needs to go away entirely, but roles that are 100% remote are a lot easier to offshore than roles that have occasional needs for in-person work, even if the latter allow for frequent WFH.

Well that’s why big tech is expanding in India

like

Google announced their AI center in October of last year. Amazon in December of last year. So “had” in your statement is probably 2-3 months back.

Those expansions are not possible in the US and they cannot hire Americans ? Is that what you are saying ? They HAVE to be in India?

If India was such a powerhouse country, they’d be world leaders. Yet, they’re not. They’re just low end labor.

Yes, but not what you think. My dad had to leave when government kept on arresting and doing fake encounters against a lot of folks from our religion. We followed him soon after. So I don’t care but companies are investing there, and also a lot of money is leaving too. A lot of people surrender their citizenships every year.

We want those income tax dollar$!

Your comment only makes sense for consulting teams. In industry you won’t find a lot of email jobs, you are responsible to develop, fix and maintain what you do.

While most teachers are protected by teacher unions, I feel my voice hasn’t been heard at all with my concerns of going back to school next week. Our diocese has decided on full return 5 days/ week for all 42 schools despite a recent increase in COVID in our communities. Every other school that I know of in my state is either choosing remote learning to start the year or a hybrid approach, yet that was not an option for us. Are other Catholic schools I. The same boat? Stay safe!
