I learned a long time ago that planning never goes the way you think it will. I think it is okay to have a general idea of where you want to go, but, like you said, it is nonlinear, and things happen that are so far outside your control.
Now more than ever, plans are subject to change. There is still value in having some kind of goals, just need to be adaptable. I like to think of it as having a skeleton idea, and everything else can be filled in as I go.
Oh definitely, this resounds with my thinking and experience so much. Opportunities. And also little things that you do every day. Being remembered by people as that person who helped and was not a pain to work with, that's a great way of seeding opportunities unintentionally.
