Never call it San Fran or SFO, step 1
Call it Frisco, like the cool kids do

Yes it's that expensive and most of the costs are unavoidable unless you choose homelessness

Ok, What’s the question?

This was definitely edited lol
$440K... I think you’ll be fine. Unless you’re looking for the most glamorous of lifestyles, an income in the top 5% is gonna be ok.
You'll pay more in rent, which is probably worth it for better WLB, weather, access to the beach / mountains / forests imo. Other costs are negligible. On that income you can also afford to buy, which would be a good investment. Sounds like a win-win
Also wine country!

money is obviously not the issue, it's other things like:
How do you feel about having a human feces tracker app on your phone? How about tent cities? Take a week off or two and spend it in SF, you should have the money to airbnb for two weeks there, see how you like it.
I’m from San Francisco and have lived in other cities for years. I love the diversity, convenience, and cultural experiences of living in Soma, Mission, and Downtown - I used to miss it when I lived elsewhere. Sure it’s dirtier, but it’s more of a product of the vast income inequality. If you’re open minded and looking for new experiences, maybe you can visit and check out the different neighborhoods. The food in the Tenderloin and Mission is awesome and more affordable.
Id jump at that offer. Better wlb culture/ access to nature in 10 minutes alone make it worthy IMO
440k is decent in Cali
Will be ok, but it IS that expensive. Buying a house will be challenging if you want that. If you have / want kids, can easily spend 2-3k in childcare costs or more per kid monthly. Depending on where you live, schools may be sub par... My wife and I are at about the same TC as you and we left SF because it would wind up just being a treadmill.
SF has gotten cheaper with covid. A few friends have gotten steals on apartments, but get there soon! Many, many people live in SF with less than $400k+ annual income. You may not be able to save as much and you (probably) won't have a house and a yard on an acre of land, but if you want to do it, you can totally make it work. If you're excited about the city and the job I say go for it! For whatever a random internet person's vote is worth.
I am excited about the job!!! I am excited to have a life outside of work
San Francisco is definitely more expensive. You will at least experience some decline in how far you money goes especially towards housing.
Other than that, at $440K you are more than ok to live almost anywhere your desire.
Yes it is but worth it honestly
$440k is plenty to live on in SF. You would obviously take a hit to your Chicago lifestyle. But same pay for half the hours seems like a great deal to me.
You need to figure out exactly what kind of lifestyle you could live in SF and see if you're okay with the downgrade.
And this is assuming you actually want to live in the Bay area.
Also, is this the TC number after negotiation?
Thank you C2. Yes, it’s the hours and the role that is exciting me. The TC is after negotiation.
Overall, does the increase in expense come from housing & potentially higher taxes? Or do you need to budget for cost increase in other areas (groceries, transportation, gym, coffee/snacks, etc.)
Jump at the offer, I’m sure you can make up some of that difference with a side hustle with the fewer hours
What offer did you get? What’s your experience? Age? Kids?
Tc :225k , 29, no kids
What do you do for 225k annually
Currently an associate at T2 (TC:210k) will be moving in as a data science manager to a mid sized retailer in Cali
440k obviously won’t go as far, but you should still be fine and seems like other factors make this a no brainer. Wife and I are about $500k and feel pretty comfortable/ own a home / etc
Thank you folks!
