Derailing your career permanently? Just frame it as a year of public service - seems like a totally understandable thing. And pretty cool!
You have a solid story to back it up. One year isn’t going to derail anything! I’ve almost had to move to Beijing for 3 years with no job for my husbands job. Was going to try and get a job at the local gym, lol now that would’ve derailed me 🥴
And that’s if I was going to granted a work visa which wasn’t a guarantee
This is a really easy story for others to understand. I’m not sure why anyone would hold it against you, especially in the federal space where it’s a familiar story. If your firm is big enough they may have sabbatical or hire back programs
I think if you lead with “I took X position to support my spouse in Y career and learned a lot about Z” you’ll be able to do well. Most normal people don’t know about GS positions/ratings. Thanks for supporting your spouse in his/her service! Hope you have a great experience abroad.
I was an FSO for 9 years and my wife had Embassy jobs early on after leaving a great private sector job. No issues derailing your career from my view. Embassy EFM positions can be rewarding and you can pitch a great story about adaptability, flexibility, and resilience living/working overseas. It's worth keeping the family together and your WLB will be great, which is nice if you're in a cool country.
This is good to hear. I am very worried about derailing my wife's career as we are about to go to our first foreign service assignment and I doubt her U.S. employer will let her keep her job.
The story is all that matters. You’ll be great if you are confident with your story. I’m excited for you!
Does money matter here? GS-6 is very low pay. I assume your housing is paid for overseas so I guess you don’t have that as an expense which helps.
