Starting to notice a pattern at my firm: the only people getting promoted aren’t the smartest, hardest working, or even the most reliable, they’re just the best at making partners feel safe and unthreatened. The people who nod a lot, defer constantly, and never challenge anything seem to move up the fastest. Meanwhile, those of us who speak up or push for better processes get sidelined. I always thought merit would win out, but now I’m wondering… is kissing ass an actual skillset I need to develop? Or is there still room for authenticity in this game?

Unfortunately, managing up is a real skill and sometimes it looks like flattery. But you don’t have to lose your integrity to build strategic relationships. It’s about reading the room and choosing your battles wisely.

My take on this is that there is a competency crisis in law. If partners perceive you as a threat to their jobs, they squelch this competition for financial security reasons.

I absolutely believe this and have observed partners (younger ones in particular) being reluctant to allow associates to fully develop into the main contacts with clients, even when the associates are fully capable of doing so

Yes, I have noticed very competent associates getting fired whereas less threatening associates keep their job forever.

What are your thoughts about putting an explanation for the current gap (as in, I haven’t been working for several months) on your resume, LinkedIn profile or cover letter? If you think it should be included in one of these places, how would you do it?

I haven’t been on the job hunt in years and have two questions for you all this morning.
1. Cover letters - they seem so antiquated to me. Are they necessary? Does it look bad if I don’t apply with one. I believe my resume is quite concise and has a profile summary 2. “Desired pay” - I want to put something like “negotiable depending on total comp package” but will that rule me out? I hate the numbers game

I need an assistant/paralegal. Probably part time at first. I live/work in a small city in Oklahoma, solo practice. I would like approx 10 billable hours/week (if part time) from them. What do i look for in one? Pay amount? (Most here make around $12/hour). Incentives for bonus money?

Any other first year associates feel like their firms don’t really appreciate how much COVID/WFH has stunted their development? I’ve been working at a biglaw firm for 5 months and don’t feel at all like a part of the team, and am extremely stressed out by the isolation of WFH most days. I’m not really sure that anyone at the firm realizes this is happening.

Feel like I am potentially on the verge of developing tendonitis / carpal tunnel. I try to keep my (standing) desk ergonomically aligned but the reality is that I spend 8-14 hrs a day typing (and, probably, tense) and I’m concerned about rendering myself physically unable to do this job. Anyone dealt with this?
