1. Strategy consulting is assisting companies with how to thing through properly planning future contingencies which they cannot understand on their own.
2. You can't competency is basically impossible to understand, I can send you a beautiful deck and it can be all BS and you will never know. It's a biases humans posses where basically we can only measure confidence and not actual competence. Basically If I can talk well spoken and pretend like I know what I am saying you will not be able to tell the difference. Lots of psychology research on this topic. Project confidence and dynamic speaking with a bit of intelligence and they will perceive competence.
3. Depends on the engagement and the type of strategy work you would do. Basically in general strategy the soft skills and stakeholder management are critical, the more technical the strategy work the likelier you will need to have that foundational knowledge or deep SME expertise. Especially in technical fields. Broad knowledge and soft skills can get you very far though.
