Do exec comp in biglaw. There are so few of us, and it’s a genuinely interesting area
Career services is conservative AF, I was told similar grade cutoffs. I think I was at or slightly over that for EC, but funnily enough, your GPA won’t actually be on your transcript and none of us who are interviewing you are doing math. So I had both EC and gen tax interviews.
Between non-TIP lottery and resume collect, and then TIP itself, there are plenty of firm opportunities. And if you take ECEB classes, the profs help network and put you in touch directly, including with midlaw firms that frankly can be just as good for learning as biglaw.
All of that being said — if I were you, I’d shelve your anticipatory anxiety and get off this app. TIP is months away. You know what you can do RIGHT NOW? Study your ass off, and get your LLM GPA in a good spot. Whatever you did as JD doesn’t matter, this is a whole new stat and it’s entirely up to you to position yourself well for spring.
And all of THAT being said — if this is your level of anxiety already, I’d think long and hard about going into biglaw. Money is great but you’ll crash and burn without a better handle on your mental health and ability to prioritize the things you actually have control over and succeed
network hard. don't just rely on TIP/TARE if ur grades aren't there. try other "less desirable" tax areas rather than just M&A tax at V20s, etc.
Your perception is way off. You’ll be fine with big4 and can switch to biglaw within a few years after nyu. Half my class did this at nyu. Many of us are now counsel and partners at firms.
Your glass is half empty but to each their own. I made equity partner in 7 years and only 3 years were at a firm. Didn’t start as a first year. Wasn’t top 1/3. Wasn’t T14. If you still care about comparing to classmates, getting laid off from biglaw is going to be an even tougher pill to swallow. Maybe biglaw isn’t for you.
There are tax boutiques/midlaw firms, especially for controversy. And other positions for SALT or Private Client... it's not just Big 4 or Big Law?
Caplin & Drysdale, Kostelanetz LLP, Roberts & Holland and Kleinberg, Kaplan, Wolff & Cohen, P.C. are boutiques that are currently hiring.
I saw Caplin is hiring for controversy but the others I don't see any job postings for.
