Only real solution for me has been to leave. Even if it’s eventually subsided and the job has become more manageable, I grow to resent the place I’m at for the experience.
Agree with both AS1 and MC1. I’ve never been able to get past the burnout by staying at the shop, and I’ve never felt as burned out as I did when working at McCann.
Agree with AS1.
McCann has been another level of burnout I didn’t know still existed. I don’t think it can or will be remedied intra-agency, so best option is to leave.
I have a friend who's taking short term disability for hers. Not sure how she finagled it but it seems to be helping.
Doctor/therapist prescription, essentially. In the US, you tell HR you need to take medical leave (no need to tell them whay), then you fill out paperwork with your doctor and file it. I’ve done it.

Depends. For me it indicates an unbalanced life. All work and no play makes me cranky and resentful.
I find I have to step back and focus else where. That usually helps. I have found my rhythm for work Sept-Dec super busy. Jan-March is quieter but it starts to pick up after that. During that slow time I focus on updating skills by taking classes, taking long weekends...
But I have worked for people who have refused to hire more help and slowly but surely everyone drops off and leaves out of sheer exhaustion. And this economy is not helping. Expecting your graphic designer to be the perfect unicorn and solve the world problems to boot. Lol
Every job I’ve had starts out great then leads to working 60hrs with no support from leadership. I get to a new place I loved with good balance and eventually it ends the same. With me burned out and hating the place and resenting my manager who doesn’t care. I finally got a job where I had the best supportive manager and work life balance, but then the ceo changed and leadership started being more toxic, then my direct report changed to a terribly toxic and unsupportive manager. I’m back to working 60 hours a week, burned out and depressed. Feeling stuck because of how terrible the market is. If it weren’t for my legal medical cannabis prescription, I don’t think I’d keep going on. I hope your situation gets better, if not, weed can help and getting some occasional exercise, therapy and self-care can help you through.
At least in my state cannabis is legal. The watermelon gummies are great. But seriously, find something you’re truly passionate about and explore ways to turn that into a side job. Yes, this will take time, but once you do it, you’ll have peace knowing you may one day be able to be your own boss. I started a blog years ago and it’s blossomed into books, numerous speaking engagements, and a new company that I founded last year after partnering with someone in my new network. I know I’ll have this when I retire, and if I need to jump ship to save my sanity, I already have opportunities and a network outside of advertising. Plus, I love this side work so much because it combines several of my passions.
Agree with AS1 MC1 CD1 and GCS 1
In theory, you need quality rest (emotional, cognitive, physical, and social, every day) and detachment; resolve conflicts if there are severe situations. In practice, I wouldn't know. The most I do is make myself as unavailable as possible outside work hours. I've come to understand that management will intentionally manipulate creatives to work more hours, although they have no legal grounds to do it. I simply say "no" and leave on time. If it's hard for you, literally sign up for some courses and make other commitments right after work hours, so you have a valid excuse to leave on time. Key is not to spend a minute beyond your working hours in the office; otherwise, everybody else starts assuming you are available. Teach them to assume that you are not.
I'm still burning out, but more from frustration on other fronts than from exhaustion.
Tracy Anderson Method, mat workout. Make the room super hot and humid, and blast my favorite songs. Then I am ready for another day with the animals.
Agree with AS1 MC1 and CD1
It can be improved though by moving internally or when they ease up on the gas. Can watch for when it’s quiet and lean into it
London-based here. We work hard but in no way the level of hours you guys do state-side. I know you get paid a whole lot more over there but I genuinely could not handle 60hrs ever. Done 50 occasionally and it always leads me to panic attacks and feeling like shite.
Hiring remotely? Lol
Yall are only working 60 hours a week? 😪😢😭
