I LOVE this podcast!!! We have fully switched over to a science of reading aligned curriculum for ELA. We’ve used Wit & Wisdom and Fundations for tier 1 for the last few years and I see a HUGE difference in kids reading abilities these last few years!
Thank you for posting this. I read a little but I’m spent - I will watch the doc tomorrow. I haven’t been educated (formally) in Reading (teaching how to read) as I’m not a teacher. But I do know that we are learning so much about what works with students and why by both cognitive scientists and neuroscientists. It’s fascinating to me so thank you!
You will love the series. It is long, and I'm still working through it, but it is eye-opening about why, as a nation, our students have consistently done worse on standardized testing over the last decade. We have not been teaching them how the English language works through phonics but instead been memorizing sight words and educated guessing by cueing. My kindergarten son learned how to read all by himself because he had 3 months of Spalding Phonics instruction (that's what curriculum we use in our district, and I love it!)
Several times while listening to this series, I was in tears. For years, I have seen more and more students that did not know how to read. Everybody that has ANY interest in children's reading instruction (which should be EVERYONE since these students are our future workforce, leaders, etc.) should listen to this and start questioning schools about phonics instruction. What has been happening for the last 40 years is criminal.
