Going back for my MS was the best thing I could have done. Since then, the quality of my work has improved dramatically (more ways to approach a problem, more efficient in solving, etc.) and I have a lot more confidence in speaking to the approach and challenges to each.
I second this. It has really propelled my career. Quite literally the best career decision I’ve made.
In advertising, it isn’t required. In any analytics capability, it is certainly helpful. If you plan to go client side, it will become much more important.
From where? Plenty of places I wouldn’t give the time of day to. Very few places that offer these that are worth their salt . I’d rather take an undergrad from a real uni with a degree in math than a paid for degree that’s shit
if you ever want to go client side you’ll need one.
Get the degree. Look at Georgia Tech for cost
As someone who hired in this area, if you want to be a director of analytics, I require a grad degree or you’re working on it. There is something that formal training offers that you can’t get on the job. There are a lot of BI backend folks who say they are directors of analytics but that’s not true. I expect director level to know more than BI. They need to understand which statistical test is best to answer the question and the data strategy for finding the best source of truth. I’ve found formal training provides this capability more reliably and thoroughly than on the job.
Speaking from experience - a grad degree doesn’t count for much in advertising. I’m a senior account exec with a Masters but my boss and his boss don’t have grad degrees.
Since you’re an analyst, I would suggest taking courses to stay up-to-date with your line of work instead of pursuing a formal degree. That is more valuable and probably cheaper as well.
Account folks are sales. Do used car salesmen need grad degrees let alone any degree at all?
Had a similar thought, cant justify the cost vs earning potential
Following.
I honestly don’t think it’s necessary. I went from agency to a Fortune 100 and I don’t have a masters. I agree with AM1, stay up to date with tools and languages (query, programming) and you’ll be fine.
This is true if you are a doer or work at a tech company where your contribution is scalable. However, at management levels where politics is your job, your logic doesn’t apply. You’ll understand as you get more experience
