Not to mention the truly breathtaking amount of times creative teams have decided “people dancing” is a concept.
Thank you
It’s crazy what’s deemed “good” and what’s lambasted as “sh*t”. It’s a process and approval industry now… I used to get nervous about screening advert edits. No longer.
The feedback is only a product of which thought-leader looks up from his phone at what point In the edit. Just put something in front of them… it’s unintelligible unpredictable subjectivity. Do the notes, rinse repeat.
Find purpose in the money, and what that can provide you and loved ones in real life, Not many jobs offer both livable wages and satisfaction with the service or product delivered. All trade offs.
As a fellow design director I feel this to my core. It feels like creative excellence has completely gone out the window. My design team really seems to struggle with craft , even when given plenty of time to work. They know what the best brands look like and are doing, so I’m not sure what is causing the lack of self awareness around the work they are making. As a DD I also feel this weird cultural pressure to clap for everything my team does despite it being this way, making it a vicious cycle. The work we put in front of clients makes me shiver sometimes. SOS.
The only reason I feel the need to clap for everything is because that’s how the wider team and company approaches feedback. My pushing and critiques are viewed as insensitive or overly-critical by the leaders above me. Anytime I’ve leaned in a bit more directly with my feedback, I’ve received social backlash. It feels like politically surviving = clapping for mediocre shit 👏

Remember when it was ok to create weird fun shit that just looked cool with crazy oneliners and jingles that got stuck in people’s heads for life. Thats the stuff that made me want to work in this business.
