Also sped teacher here, of very medically complex young students. Gtubes, trachs, vents, suction, 02, etc. Parents should love them, provide for them, support them and encourage their dreams. Best case scenario, they should work with the schools to procure the best academic outcomes, but for some families academic outcomes aren’t the first priority. We should support the families as best we can, and with what it is in our power to do.

Wonderful comment! Thank you 💖
Sped teachers really can't do it alone, we need so much more support than standard teachers. Parents should definitely be involved, whether it’s helping with homework, creating a supportive environment, or advocating for their child’s needs. Every bit of support outside the classroom makes a huge difference in my students' growth

Yes!! Completely agree.
It’s a nationwide problem, I from New York now in Lad Vegas same thing. In preschool some students are prepared because parents initiated either home schooling or some sort of training students are ready to learn.
Other parents do nothing students don’t stay seated can not hold a crayon or pencil.
These parents leave everything to the teachers and the children suffering without those skills there is a constant need for elementary school teachers here. They continue to build schools without enough teachers.

Glad I'm not the only one who has noticed! Something needs to change.
I get tired of ppl who complain about public schools and put the complete burden of student success or lack thereof on the backs of “teachers”.
We know by research that kids do better socially and academically when parents are involved with their education. When there is a strong school/family connection kids do better.
I recently retired as school social worker. Worked for 27 yrs in K-12.
Most of my work was with the high-risk students and sped students, and their parents; this included most of the kids with mental health issues too. I knew that I had a better chance of getting somewhere w the students if I had a relationship with the parents. The majority of parents were very receptive and would open up about their struggles. I helped as best I could, esp on a parent to parent level (I too have 3 sons close in age). When parents don’t have support, their kids have so much more to deal with.
My last bitch is the amount of time our kids are on electronics. It starts at such a young age too. That’s an entirely different animal.
The success of a child academically depends on more than just what is being taught in the classroom imo.
Ideally parents and teachers should be a team for their child's education. Unfortunately some parents don't know how to parent and/or don't have the interest to do things with their child. Sometimes it is as simple as talking with their child at dinner, checking their homework, reading with them, and playing games with their child. The students that have parents do this seem to do better. I agree with other people about the use of electronics at home. Limit it and then do something with them. Kids need to interact with their parents and siblings instead of just electronics.
