Yes!!! I recently got laid off and as a 20 year career bartender I can’t find a job bartending for the life of me, I settled with Safeway for now, and the department I will be in sounds fun but nowhere near the $ I’m used to making
I’m so sorry you lost your job! At least you have a new job - even if it doesn’t pay as well. I think any job is better job than no job right now. I’m praying that the market improves and we can all find good jobs…
I'm not, but I haven't been working as long as you have and I'm sure don't command the same salary. Even if I had, I don't think I'd be that concerned though. This industry feels like one of the safer ones to be in right now - AI isn't taking this job. And it's really hard to find good workers and managers. I bet your track record and experience gives you a lot more security than you think it does.
This is one of the first times I would be very concerned to find myself without a job. Before, it would not have been hard to go from one place to another. Now, I have no idea how long that could take. I’m trying not to stress myself out over things that aren’t happening, but yes, definitely a concern.
I have been in fine dining for 25 years, and I was just let go by my 30 year old Director of Operations because I “helped out my staff too much.” I am sorry- but I was dealing with a highly demanding and exclusive clientele, and a sense of urgency and work ethic can’t be taught. I refused to let service go south and we have Gen Z idiots- who don’t know what proper service is-getting rid of those of us who do. I am terrified that even with years of experience, I won’t be able to find a job in this market… especially in my mid 50s!
I’m sorry your young director laid you off. He has no idea what he’s lost. They really don’t appreciate old school service. It’s a dying art. I’m in my 40s and already feeling the threat of age discrimination. I just don’t know how I’ll get by if I lose my job. I know it’s rough out there right now for us with experience.
