I don't know why the corporate board members feel a wunderkind with an advanced degree and less than three years of real-life professional experience is the answer for a marketing campaign. I'm all far fresh ideas and new approaches, but there's a reason wheels are round and not square. They work better. All you can do is give Mr. Wonderful the benefit of your experience. If he proposes something you've seen fail before, not what happened and try to brainstorm a way that it might work. Unfortunately, you're limited in what you can tell him because he is the department director. All you can do is politely try to knock the matches our his hand before he lights them.
Are you on the OPs team to know the situation? If not, there’s a lot of assumption packed in here — 1.) The board of most companies doesn’t make hiring decisions at the director level, 2.) for all we know, the OP could be 55 and the director on the team could be 40+, which would be very far from a wunderkind with less than 3 years of experience, and 3.) the OP used gender neutral pronouns so it’s curious that you’ve labeled this new leader as a man.
Also, we live in a world now where artificial general intelligence (AGI) has likely been discovered — literally, a revolution level change on a global scale must be anticipated by all businesses who will succeed. Tried and true and status quo are increasingly irrelevant, and hey, ya never know, we might just find square wheels work great for our future of electric vertical take off and landing (eVTOL) flying cars of our future.
Perhaps instead of knocking matches out of their hand, one could explore pathways of being authentic, open, and collaborative in finding solutions that protect the OPs role while also positively supporting AND challenging their leader’s vision. I’ve found almost all of my directors are open to being challenged and find great value in their direct reports who can do so tactfully, directly, and with an alternative solution offered. ‘That’s a bad idea’ is a far cry from, ‘These points are concerning me about that idea, can we talk through how you anticipate mitigating them? Also, I have one idea I’d like to run past you as an alternative to explore before we take action on this project’.
