I have worked in both firms and although I am not in the insurance practice group, I have seen plenty of insurance associates/partners moving in-house easily as claims counsel/director or something similar. The insurance associates are sent on secondments to the claims team to maintain or build relationships.
Most stay on in either firm and you rise fairly easily through the ranks because there's no real pressure to bring in your own clients/matters - both firms are on global retainers for all the top insurers across most sectors.
You are right in that if you are looking to move firms outside of Clydes and Kennedys in insurance, it's going to be difficult unless you move away from acting for the insurers. But hey, if you have no reason to leave, then the "lack of alternatives" shouldn't really be an issue I guess.
