There is a grad student working with me this semester who is in her early 50s! She just became an empty nester and has always wanted to work in a school as a speech therapist. I’ve been at my company for 8 months. I just found out another designer who has been here for several years gets an annual bonus at the end of the fiscal year. How do I effectively utilize my special ed ea?

I am teaching 4 sections of math this year. My school curriculum is IReady. Which find to be to complex and busy for SPED kids. Does anyone use an interactive notebook along with standard curriculum? If so what fo you use?

Too many cooks in the kitchen

I love my job in special education, the job may bring quite a bit of stress and exhaustion but nothing compares to the stress of the related service team. OT, PT, speech, BCBA, social worker, etc etc is really what’s killing me this year. It is 23 days into the school year and the team members all make different plans and as a result, nothing is being accomplished. And if paraprofessionals follow ie what OT says but not PT, it cause so much unnecessary conflict!

How do you approach a stinky middle school kid or their parents with hygiene suggestions? I don’t know how to politely tell anyone that they smell bad.

I feel like I'm at my wits end. I teach self-contained classes and according to the ISBE website my classes shouldn't be more than 8 students unless I have an aide - then it can be 10. I have no aide and most of my classes are around 14 kids. Some with behavior plans that are only out of our behavior room setting for my class... Is anybody else out there going through illegal class sizes for self-contained? How are you dealing? Maybe a vent session is in order.

Without warning it looks like we'll be switching from consultant teaching to inclusion...what do I need to know. Never co-taught or done inclusion except for years and years ago and it was very informal. Best ways to build a solid relationship with the classroom teacher you're paired with? How do you all feel since this distance learning began? What are your specific duties related to sped and how you’re providing services? Curious how it’s being done all over.

Anyone else the last to be informed about ANYTHING at their site? I am only a second year SPED teacher and my eyes are already wide open to the fact that admin and Gen Ed teachers so often fail to inform me about important things regarding the grade levels I teach and other school events. Then I’m left scrambling to inform my students and parents of essential information, and I’m embarrassed! My aides also look at me like why don’t you know this? Aggravating.

I’ve 90 min for ELA & 6 kids. I need to teach phonics, curriculum (has 0 phonics), & goals & they need freq. breaks. Admin’s making me use said curric. Any ideas?? Small groups and rotate? TIA!

High school special class (self-contained) teachers: What do you use for planning? I’ve always been an inclusive teacher, so I followed the plan book of my co-teacher. I can’t even decide if I should go digital or paper-based let alone make a final decision! I’ll be teaching 9-11th grade math and 11th grade science. The 11th grade classes I can very much do whatever I (or the student) want/need…there isn’t a set curriculum
