I work in aerospace and am an MBB former

1) While McKinsey is the dominant MBB consultancy, McK uses all three

2) The average talent level of Boeing employees and the level of delivery from Boeing is increasingly regarded as somewhat of a joke in the wider industry. Retired and reserve military officers described them to me as “the vendor that charges the most for doing the least,” and I saw borderline criminal billing practices on their contracts. Nobody brags about or proactively mentions working at Boeing. It’s the place you work because you got rejected from everywhere else.

As much as it might infuriate you to acknowledge, engineering companies run by engineers have much better track records than those run by non-engineer former consultants. That's why Boeing went and hired one and passed on the ex-consultants this time.

McNerney purged and completely replaced the space division to cut costs. Now Boeing can't get to space anymore without critical systems failing and people getting stuck in space and they might lose the whole space division as a consequence. Not that McNerney cares because he cashed in and bounced before investors realized the damage he did.

You know what company can still get to space and back? The one that stayed engineer-run and never passed the baton to management consultants.

Say what you want, the results are obvious.

...and, for McKinsey folk, if your organization had a hand in a great company's demise, you should be careful when dishing out insults. It might come back to you.

This is exactly what McK was hired for though. The general staff shouldn’t be confused because the McK consultants are there to run around to gather data and present a summation. There’s nothing game changing to be determined here. Boeings problems are well documented and already verified.

I’ve delivered on a Boeing project in the past couple of years. We all know Boeing is a troubled organization due to the elevation of the MD execs vs the previous Boeing execs. Boeing went from a great manufacturing giant to a sub-contracting oversight business organization.

OP, Are you new to consulting?

OP I think you fail to understand why consulting companies exist. Not because the internal teams are less competent and also not because Consulting companies are brilliant at everything.

I'm trying to frame my answer to the leadership question. I once talked to my mom about how I was selected as CEO in a group project. It was because of my strong technical skills+connections(I already know 80% of the group)+activeness. My mom said that's exactly what she values in the professional setting. Can I answer the question in this way during interviews? I feel like it's not the common approach since this answer does not involve any specific actions, but could potentially stand out.
