Venice boardwalk, explore Santa Monica, lunch in Malibu... Can easily do all 3 in a day.
SA1 nailed the route. I would stay in Santa Monica, rent a bike and bike to Venice. If you like surfing take a surf lesson. Go to Malibu and then come back and get drunk in Santa Monica.
Oh if you’re flying into LAX, just rent bikes / Uber around those areas. I live in Santa Monica and I’ve never paid more then $15 to somewhere on the west side (e.g., Venice, Malibu, Marina, Culver).
Just rent a car in SD and drive up to LA, it's two hours or you can drive up pch and hit a couple beach towns on the way, and yes it's better to have a car in la rather than uber unless staying in beac cities area for the duration
Just spent three days in LA this past weekend. everyone says to rent a car. Fully unnecessary. Use public transport. Buy a TAP card ($1) and load a day pass worth of money on there ($7) and you can use all the buses and subways. Download google maps and route yourself wherever you need to go via the buses or subway. Everyone complains online the public transport is always delayed or takes long in traffic, whether a bus uber or rental car there’s traffic, and the “delays” were literally max five minutes for the delays.
Getty museum in LA. Del Mar has fairgrounds with various activities through the racing off season.
Look into the train that goes from SD to LA; I’ve heard it’s undergoing maintenance but not sure on the details. If that’s not an option, I’d rent a car. An Uber would be pricey for that drive and you’d still need a way to get around once you’re in LA
Also, for SD, Pacific Beach, Gaslamp, and La Jolla are my favorite spots
Thanks so much all!! =)
Rent a car in LA/ Malibu, driving down highway 1 is awesome. Parking in Santa Monica/ Venice can be a bit of a pain depending on the time of day

Would it make more sense to rent a car or just uber/lyft to get around in LA?
Actually taking a flight from SD to LA. Looking more into whether it would be cheaper to rent within LA or uber/is metro more convenient and easy to use to get around those spots?
