Thinking of getting a cat for my small apartment, since wfh all day now. Any advice or tips from other cat owners?

Ik a lot of people have been buying pets recently bc wfh, but please think longer term. Who will socialize with and take care of your pet when things normalize months down the line and you’re back to how things were? Cats are less maintenance than dogs but they are still social creatures, please think of their well being before making a potentially short sighted decision

likesmart

OP in that case see if you can foster a cat with the intention of adopting to try it out! Also would suggest scratching posts/mats and get a water fountain instead of having a water bowl. Cats like to drink from moving water and it’s important they are hydrated bc they get blocked easily! Also make sure you adopt from someone reputable (shelters are ok, but see how long the cat has been there) since sometimes health problems will pop up and it gets $$$

I love my cats so much. Ours are very staggered in age. Oldest is 14 (adopted her at 4 yrs), middle is 8 yrs (think she's a ferral cat even though we adopted her as a kitten), youngest is 2.

My advice, and something I read and definitely took in after our youngest (correct, these are my "kids" and yes, I bucked the trend and am a married crazy cat lady), is that if you're getting a kitten, get two/litter mates. They need the socialization and companionship. Plus another kitten will teach them how hard is too hard when they're playing. Just be wary. Kittens are hard. There were a few months where I looked like I lived with Edward Scissor Hands.

Or get an older cat. There are so many in shelters after their owners pass away, or just get tired of them. I wish I could take them all.

A little late to the party here but I’m a big fan of adopting grown cats instead of the cute kittens. You can see their personality when you meet them and it’s less likely to change since they’re already fully grown. My cat is a real snugglebug which is what I was looking for. Lower energy than a kitten, litter trained, and super happy to have more room than he did at the humane society when I brought him home. He’s been with me for 10 years now.

100000% agree. adult cat adoption is the best!

Get a hairless one. It’s a pain rolling fur off all your clothes and have it covered 5 min later.

Cats are great for people in consulting because they’re ok by themselves for a couple of days. Although you should consider having someone come by on Rover if you’re out of town and live alone. Cats come potty trained... literally get it from the adoption place, put it in the litter box, and it will forever go in the litter box. Strongly suggest picking one out that wants to snuggle/be held and is sociable with people. But of course do consider long term, some cats do live to be 20+ years.

like

True they do like human interaction and my cats are extremely loyal to me. My roommate has told me when I’m on the road my cats behave differently than when I’m home on weekends. But if you have a cat sitter come by while you’re gone usually I expect they play and brush the cats etc.

like

I just adopted a kitty during this pandemic but had been planning to for months. It’s the best decision (but you do know you’re signing up for AT LEAST 10 years with this animal). Do definitely need to think it through all the way: Who will take care of it if you go on a longer term vacation? Do you have time to play with it everyday or most days? Are you ready to pay for medical bills that come up for it? In terms of how to deal in a small apartment I got a Litter Genie which makes scooping so much faster and less painful. And I have an air purifier coming in the mail to help with the cat smell.

like

PWC2, good points. Cats can live up to 20 years. Definitely a long term commitment.

I’ve had cats while traveling for work. They’re easier to maintain, have a cat sitter come by and clean their litter. But I use a gravity feeder and water fountain. So they are good with food on their own

like

I am so happy I got a cat. I’d always been a dog person, but I also live in a small apartment and I’m rarely home (until now ). Start thinking about where the litter box will go now, and spend the extra money on one that’ll prevent litter from getting everywhere.

I also recommend getting a scratching post that doubles as a sitting perch. Thankfully my cat rarely scratches anything else because based on the way he scratches that thing I would have no furniture left.

I thought it was a firm requirement at McK to have a cat?

Litterally (word play) 3 of my classmates who went there all had cats. And they spoke of Friday conference calls where their colleagues had cats.

We found a litter of four six-week-old kittens in my mother’s backyard, homed two of them with her sweet next-door neighbor, and kept two. I agree with EY1 that it was a huge benefit when they were kittens that they had each other to play with and take comfort in while they were warming up to us. We mostly left them alone and once a day would pick them up and hold/snuggle them for 15-20 minutes. When they started purring while we held them we knew we were in.

Now they follow us everywhere we go. If I go upstairs to change they will come up and wait for me and then follow me back downstairs. They meow for me to sit down so they can snuggle with me. They are very loving.

Cats are excellent companions. And they are definitely less maintenance than dogs (especially since they toilet themselves). But if you are a traveler, you still have to be concerned about their care while you are away. Think it through before you make your decision. And if you do get kittens, please don’t declaw them. It is cruel.

like

Omg my cats do the same thing. Follow me around everywhere and just want to be pet or snuggled. While I’ve been WFH one of my cats literally jumps and plops himself in my lap for hours and falls asleep while I’m at my desk! They’re such funny little creatures

like

Cats need attention and playtime, too. They are creatures of habit and like to eat at regular times. Can you provide this when you go back to work? Also, consider getting two cats so they can keep each other company, groom each other and exercise. Kittens, especially, need this kind of socialization.

like

Oh! And I highly recommend getting an automatic feeder that you can program vs. a gravity feeder. The one I got was fairly inexpensive and it’s great to not have to worry if you get stuck at the office late or go on an overnight trip.

Get a kitty litter concealer - looks like furniture and may contain the odor. Clean the kitty litter daily to minimize the odor.

I heard female cats are more tame while the male ones get more rowdy

1000% depends on the cat

like

Excellent decision! Cats are great companions without demanding too much. I have one in my small apartment - never have had an issue with smell. Highly recommend the scoop free self cleaning litter box. No scooping! Also the furminator brush & dander wipes to cut down on shedding. & definitely a good scratching post.

When I was traveling I adopted two male kittens from the same litter. They are the best cats. I’ve seen tips for a plus one litter box to the number of cats, and scratching posts, but also get something for vertical space. I have window hammocks for them the lounge in and watch the world go by, and 6 foot cat tower. I also have some wood/canvas hammocks on the wall in my bedroom so they can walk from one side of the room to another, and lounge if they want to. It was a joke while traveling, my house was the cats’ house, they just let me stay over on weekends. Also, if you get kittens, play with their feet to get used to being touched. You’ll be able to clip their nails easier.

I have three cats. One found us as a kitten the other two we adopted. They bring me and the SO endless entertainment and I love them so much. The two we adopted within the last few months do not want to be held(both female were street cats and poorly socialized while in foster care). We know they love us as they do brush up against our ankles and snuggle up in the bed at night. Be patient some take a little longer than others to be friendly

I have one cat and she’s fine without a second kitty friend FYI

I’ve been with my current company for a little over 5 years now and since the start of the pandemic have been WFH. I absolutely love WFH and have always wanted a position in which I could WFH.
